Now to demonstrate my abysmal ignorance . . . I thought a lynching was hanging someone by the neck until dead without benefit of trial. Those guys are feet-up.
Lynching would seem to frequently feature hanging by the neck, but that method of killing doesn't seem essential. During the 1980s, the African National Congress lynched people by placing a burning, petrol soaked tyre around their necks. (Be sure to scroll the page for multiple sources of the definition.)
