Democrats are stepping up attacks on President Bush in the belief that growing criticism from his conservative base over his handling of the conflict in the Middle East and his domestic policies has begun to weaken him politically.

"The Republicans have been calling any legitimate policy difference unpatriotic, and you can't do that when the incoming artillery is coming from your right flank, and that includes the Middle East," said Erik Smith, chief spokesman for House Democratic Leader Richard A. Gephardt of Missouri.

DemocRATS usually see all manner of things that don't exist. Might have something to do with all the chemicals that they ingest. or the in-breeding that they are so fond of. Either way, who cares what they "see"?

Not one to like many of the decisions Bush has made lately; but, he could single handidly do away with the IRS and all it's codes, and the dem's would still announce crap like "Bush is slipping"...

Morris is being so kind to Bush because he is using the tactics he wanted Clinton to use but didn't until he got caught with the toe whore in that DC hotel and had to fire him. Anotherwords Bush is taking some of the Lefts issues and making them his own or signing on to them and comming out each day with a new initiative. He says it doesn't really matter to most Americans the details only what it looks like on the surface like Clinton appearing to be moderate but really a radical left winger.

He was on Hannity for a full hour yesterday and pretty much spilled his guts !

Two things are certain in elections for both parties. The base always comes home before election. The base on the left came home for HHH in 1968. The base came home for Jerry Ford in 1976. The mistake for a Democrat or Republcian is to pander to his base. It costs the center every time and the center is what you have to have to win. Bases are important when you must win a primary. But no primary contest means you can go for the center.

The problem is always getting enough of the middle to win. The Democrats would like to drive Bush into going for the right. That would cost him the center and let the Democrats keep control of the Senate this fall.

The name of the game is control of the senate. To get control of the senate you have to get more than half of the middle. That means to have effective control of the senate the Repubilcans have to get a good hunk of those that are left of center.

If all you get is your base and half of the center, all your support is on the right side of the 50 yard line. That also means a tie. A tie is stalemate. Seventy years of leftist laws and court rulings can't be undone with stalemate.

With Daschle where he is now nothing can be accomplished. If we fight him directly now, we will accomplish what fights always do. They divide the voters down the middle. In that scenerio Daschle has the senate for two more years.

To control the supreme court for the next 20 years BUSH MUST GET THE SENATE. If he does not the DEMOCRATS get their agenda ruled by judges Democrats want to rule on the Constitution.

Why is it so hard to see. To keep the Democrats from prevailing we have to win the senate. To keep the Democrats from forcing a Warren court times ten BUSH MUST Win the senate. To win the Senate he must get people who are left of center to vote Republican.

Democrats always understand what must be done to control the agenda and the court. They know the majority of the public is not with them. The right never figures out that the center is not with the left or the right.

The left never for a moment forgets they can't win without the center. The right rarely sees that truth. They ususally try to punish any politician smart enought to know that the only way to victory is to get people that disagree with you to vote for you. Then user their mandate to enact your agenda.

It ain't nice. It ain't sweet. It is the way the rules work in this representative republic.

Those too moral to use the rules to win always lose. And that is the moral of the story.

"attacks from his conservative base"

Where?? I haven't seen any! The only attacks I've seen came from one place - democrats/liberals.

And ... they only wish he was slipping.

You haven't been around FR very much the last few weeks! Conservatives have come out of the woodwork to bash him. Hell, listen to Rush and Hannity criticize him on an almost daily basis and you'd conclude that he is being weakened as well.

No, its not the meds they take so they can change their socialist minds, its the method they use to predict the trends. Chicken guts and mojo feather dolls are not the most scientific methods of forcasting political leanings.

Two things are certain in elections for both parties. The base always comes home before election.

That is simply not the case. The base never came home for George Bush Sr. - 25% of Republican voters went elsewhere, mostly for Perot. The base never came home for Bob Dole - 36% of evangelicals went for Clinton. And to a much lesser degree, a portion of the base never went for Bush Jr. The Bush campaign expected 19 million conservative Christians to turn out for them - 15 million did. That 4 million vote lag would have won the popular vote and wrapped up the electoral college easily.

So in the Republican Party the base only comes home if the perceive the candidate to reflect their interests.

Must be really disheartening to be sitting around waiting for Bush approval ratings to slide.

No agenda, no media attention, no one cares. What a sad time to be a RAT. Makes me all teary eyed.

I listen to Rush every day. When I can't listen, I tune in on the internet at night. I don't necessarily think what Rush is saying about Bush would be called "bashing". I think the people calling are not conservatives. If you disagree with me, that's fine.
