On Wednesday, the Jerusalem-born actress objected tartly in the Harvard Crimson to law student Faisal Chaudhry's April 11 essay on U.S. policy concerning Israel and the Palestinians.

Portman continued: "Outrageous and untrue finger-pointing is a childish tactic that disregards the responsibility of all parties involved."

If you are female, I apologize. We men frequently forget about such things as politics when we see a beautiful woman like Ms. Portman. Of course after talking with said women (and I have been around a lot of liberal women) 95% of us find we can't bear them.

I have a lot of respect for her, she's one of the few actresses that didn't/won't go the route of making the crummy "show your breasts" movies that many others have done.

"Harvard-educated" has always been a negative for me. I have hated anyone who has gone to that school. Besides, many of the technocrats who have screwed up Latin America (where I did most of my business in the past) attended Harvard, usually the economics department or the Kennedy School.

DVD only, I believe. There's about 20 minutes of added-in footage, with Leon teaching Mathilda to be a "hit girl." There's a scene where the two go into a crack lab (Mathilda has a paintball pistol to practice with) and take out the guy running it that is priceless. Plus a lot of footage that adds more resonance to the end.

When Luc Besson originally wrote it he meant for Mathilda to be about 14, but Natalie Portman so impressed him that he rewrote it to make her younger.

Let's hope that the current situation in her homeland "enlightens" her to the value of gun onwership. C'mon Natalie, repeat after me: "For every Jew, a .22!"

Explain it to me

Can someone explain to me why the Middle East gets so much coverage in the States. I am interested in it a bit from an Old Testament / History of Man point ot view but I find it a bit boring after a while. It seems to me to be all that gets talked about on freerepublic nowadays. Mark Steyn is my favourite and he has written about little else recently.

Very true. Most Freepers who don't live in largely Jewsih areas like I have can't seem to understand that while Jews in Hollywood, New York, South Florida, etc. may be liberal on most issues, they become downright hawkish when it comes to Israel. Robert Wexler (D-Boca Raton) is a case in point.

One of the oddest coalitions in politics are the right-wing evangelicals and largely (though not entirely) left-leaning Jews on the issue of Israel.

For the record, I subscribe to a theology which rejects the concept of "rapture" and does not take a position on Israel. Nevertheless, I support its right to exist and defend itself for purely secular reasons.

Foreign policy in general not related to national interest bores me. I am more interested in reducing the size of government at home than "crusading" to protect our "allies," whoever they may be. Hell, I am with Jeanne Kirkpatrick since she reportedly advised Reagan to let Argentina keep the Malvinas.

Those Hollywood, and similar type, Jews support Israel in the same way they- and their Liberal Gentile friends- support the US: in the abstract.

But in specific details their policies vis a vis Israel are as damaging to Israel as their policies vis a vis the US are damaging to the US.

People who support Israel with my views think them all enemies of Israel and the US.

Amen. Also, many in Hollywood interested in foreign policy tend to be close to the Labor party. BiBi was barely tolerated among that crowd in the US.

Then there is Carl Levin who is worthless on everything.

She still sides with the gun grabbing Nazis.

Now that ruins everything!

I must admit that I found her to be quite attractive in Episode I

The way her face lit up right after Anakin Skywalker asked her if she was an angel made it worth the price of admission AND suffering through Jar-Jar Binks.

Visit Israel guys. You'll see many who look just like her, in uniform, slinging a powerful weapon.
