NEW YORK -- As Cardinal Edward Egan headed to the Vatican for a summit on sexual abuse, his stand-in at St. Patrick's Cathedral gave a homily blaming the scandal on homosexuality and an "immoral country."
Monsignor Eugene Clark, an outspoken clergyman of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New York, called homosexuality a "disorder" and said gay men should not be allowed to become priests, the Daily News reported in Monday's editions.
"The tendency to homosexuality is a disorder, not a sin," Clark said in his 15-minute sermon Sunday. "But the practice of homosexuality is truly sinful."
Clark also said the United States is "probably the most immoral country certainly in the Western Hemisphere" and blamed American society for being "very protective" of homosexuality.
Egan named Clark rector of St. Patrick's after taking over for Cardinal John O'Connor more than one year ago.
Before leaving for Rome, Egan asked parishioners at a Bronx church to pray for him and other American cardinals as they prepared to leave for Rome to address the sex abuse scandal with the pope.
"Please keep us in your prayers these next four or five days," Egan told the congregation at St. Anthony of Padua Church in the Morrisania section.
He asked the congregation of about 150 people to "keep in your prayers the meeting we're going to have in Rome. We're facing a very tragic situation. Our Holy Father wishes to speak with us about this and we're anxious to hear what he has to say."
Egan, the former bishop of Bridgeport, Conn., whose handling of sexual abuse cases there has come under heavy criticism, did not directly address the criticism against him.
Also Sunday, in a letter from Bishop Thomas Daily, parishioners in the Diocese of Brooklyn were told that the names of 21 priests, stretching back some 20 years, were given to the district attorney's office of Brooklyn and Queens counties.

Yep, and if we eliminated Hollyweird we'd be even more moral .
At least this article stuck to the facts and the author did not try to embellish the story with 'alternate viewpoints' from the homosexual lobby!
I maintain that only the Catholic Church has the ability to stem the tide of the homosexual indoctrination being forced upon the American public (and most importantly... children). Thank you for posting this. I agree that it's about time this truth gets some 'air-time!'
Send coffee! Quick!
On the other hand, it would have been nice if Msgr Egan could have presented some factual basis for his assertion that the USA is the least moral country in the Western Hemisphere. Name one member state of the European Union that has a higher rate of church attendence? Or even the results of a simple public opinion poll: "Do you believe in G-d?". USA wins hands down. Maybe we should simply note the age of consent laws in the United States are probably stricter than most European and Latin American nations. And are probably enforced more. Is too facile to suggest that the more rigorous enforcement of laws that protect children in the USA against the look-the-other-way tolerance of (dare I say it) less-moral nations skews the data?
This would be accepted as true by some Wesleyans..the "bent toward sin" is not sin..only the actually completion..I happen to agree with you (and the word of God of course:>))..
I wish that it were so, but I believe that the Roman Catholic Church has been seriously compromised, and we are just now seeing the extant of the curruption.
The homosexuals have wormed thier way into some very powerfull positions in the Church, and certainly protect "thier own".
I read Egans statemnt that they just didn't realize how harmfull the homosexual molesters were, how come they were the last to know something the rest of us knew in the early 70's?
If a Priest was caught embezzeling money from the parish, do you think they would just be transfered to another parish?
"They" are tearing the churches down from inside,
and we know that Satan prowls the earth like a lion seeking to devour who he may.
I'm not sure that I want to continue bringing my family to a Catholic church anymore, I am looking, and praying...
