So then, by this definition, we are all adulterers?

Monsignor: "The tendency to homosexuality is a disorder, not a sin,..."

Bible: "But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart." (Matthew 5:28)

There's no contradiction between what Msgr. Clark said and what the Bible says. Looking is an ACTION. Msgr. Clark wasn't talking about actions.

If the Bible verse means that all homosexuals are ALWAYS sinning because they have an attraction to men, then it means that all heterosexuals are ALWAYS sinning because they have an attraction to women.

That homosexuals molest children is a tragedy...that the Catholic church put homosexuals in positions of authority over children and then covered up their depridations is the scandal.

One of the most succinct observations I've read.

Clark also said the United States is "probably the most immoral country certainly in the Western Hemisphere"....
I wish he would have had the guts to name a more moral country.

Is there a betting pool? Based on the usual sympathies of people who like to trash-talk America, I call dibs on "Cuba".

Egan, the former bishop of Bridgeport, Conn., whose handling of sexual abuse cases there has come under heavy criticism, did not directly address the criticism against him.

Clark also said the United States is "probably the most immoral country certainly in the Western Hemisphere" and blamed American society for being "very protective" of homosexuality.

....isn't this like the pot calling the kettle black?

As always, well said. But don't expect the distinctions between inclination, entertaining temptation, and action to be understood.

Since the Monsignor said that we are "the most immoral country," certainly in the Western Hemisphere, he obviously thinks Cuba ranks higher than we do.

I wonder what personal immoralities he contributed to justify his ranking of the United States as the least moral country.

Let's see - how about Brazil for rampant child labor and child prostitution? How about Colombia for allowing itself to be overrun with drug lord gangsters? How about Mexico, which tolerates what is essentially an *invasion* of the US with millions of illegal immigrants, and deliberately mires itself in a corrupt government which encourages such outmigration?

I think there are a LOT of countries and situations worse in this hemisphere than in the US. And if you want to go to other continents, watch out!

I'm not defending the good ol' U.S. of A., but this is a bit over the top. Unfortunately, as immoral as we are, we are still one of the most (if not the most) moral countries in the western hemisphere. If you don't believe me, then go down to some of the S.A. countries during Mardi-Gras...

problem is, not moral enough to prevent what we got coming. Where much is given, much is required.

Sounds like more denial of responsibility to me, no different than that idiot who blamed the victims for "squealing".

"Fool me once, shame on you -- fool me twice, shame on me." The Church hierarchy moved these men around and allowed them to continue their actions for years. That's inexcusable.

Also Sunday, in a letter from Bishop Thomas Daily, parishioners in the Diocese of Brooklyn were told that the names of 21 priests, stretching back some 20 years, were given to the district attorney's office of Brooklyn and Queens counties.

Assuming that a Catholic diocese contains about 100 parishes (I don't know the real breakdown), those 21 priests probably mean that there were problems in perhaps 10% of the parishes. Regardless of the true percentage, that is a stunning number from a single diocese, especially since one has to think that they didn't get them all.

One probably cannot expect all 178 dioceses to have that percentage; however, I wouldn't be at all surprised to see other largely urban dioceses to have as many, or more priests eligible for legal referrals.

This is getting uglier -- as well it should.

We could get into quite a debate about that one, but suffice it to say that the ol US of A is on seriously shakey moral ground and has NO room to call any kettle black

Case in point: compare where you were allowed to go as a kid, to where you let your kids go, at the same age.

Somebody (de Toqueville?) once wrote that Americans were great, because they were trusting. Trust comes only when you believe that the people around you will behave in a moral fashion. How many people do you trust today?
