Listen to the LYRICS man; he has issues with hypocracy in organised religion, especially the Church of England...Never caught anything overtly anti-god or whatever...Did you never listen to "A Christmas Song"?

Ian got a bad rap 'Hymm 43 is the song where you'll find the famous line about how 'if Jesus saves, he'd better save himself...', so much hated by orthodoxal church abiders who intentionally neglect that the second half of the phrase goes '...from the gory glory seekers who use his name in death').

Great lyrics from 'My God' ..Ian's blues for God..

From New Musical express interview

27 March 1971

ON THE SIDE OF GOD AND THE OUTCAST TRAMP

'My God', says Anderson, is a blues for God, not in any way a condemnation of God. It is on his side; a lament that there are so many different ways of worshipping God. He is a social crutch for so many. The thing I am against is that God is not a God in a spiritual sense but as a figurehead of religion. Poor God, and this is putting it frivolously, he must have a rotten time being God to his Roman Catholics, God to his Jews, God to his Protestants.

'My God' is a slightly humorous lament for God's state of having to be God for everyone which in my concept of God he is, but they aren't thinking of it like that. They say he is MY God so he can't be your God. The Roman Catholics' God isn't the Jews' God and so on. He can't be the same God for everyone.

You listen to the LYRICS. And tell me that these are merely issues with te Church of England and have nothing to do with mocking Christianity.

"if Jesus saves, well he better save himself! "His cross was rather bloody and he could barely roll his stone...now Jesus save me!"

Give me a break. If you have respect for Christ (who is God incarnate) you don't write songs like this.

What does this mean that could possibly be respectful of Christ's death as an atonement for sin?
Ian is clearly making a mockery of the central message of Christianity which is that Christ's death spells victory for the believer.

Ian is saying that Christ's message needs to be rescued ('saved') from those who use it poorly, in vain, and so on.

Ian was careful never to cross the line in my view. You are entitled to your opinion.

I love Jethro Tull, I think he (John Taylor?) has the sexiest voice. Saw JT many years ago when they did Passion Play. Thanks for the pictures.

Wow. I LOVE Jethro Tull, but I thank you for the Rockline link especially because it offers a listen to the first new RUSH music in 6 years. Can't wait for Vapor Trails to come out!

Ian as a defender of "Christ's message"?
While he is cursing and spitting on stage?
With all due respect I had to laugh at the thought.

Yes, that's one of my favorites.
The girl I lived with when that came out was just crazy about Jethro Tull...and wouldn't rest until we had the album.
One of my other favorites is 'Locomotive Breath.'

Not that theres much point arguing but: I havent heard Ian curse on stage, except when something goes horrendously wrong (He is a consumate professional)...Still, I havent been to every concert. As for the spitting, he is a vocalist in a rock band and theres bound to be some spittle flying about...If its that big a problem dont get so close to the stage, dude!
