In the early 1980s, a contagion of child sex-abuse scandals began erupting around the nation--events that brought non-stop TV coverage only slightly less fevered than the strange and voluminous reports emanating from the prosecutors' offices, about bad clowns, molestation in magic rooms, or hot air balloons. Charges bearing no resemblance to the sorts of accusations now being leveled at Roman Catholic priests, and for good reason.

We must never forget, Reno was hand-picked by Hillary (on the recommendation of her brother Hugh) all along. In one of the Clinton expose books, it states that Clinton nominated the other AG's knowing they would have problems passing the Senate - their choice all along was Reno. My thoughts are they knew she was corrupt and manageable.

The scary thing is not Reno. It is that American citizens would vote for her. They know what she has done. And they don't care.

Probably the saddest thing about these cases (though it's really hard to choose) is that the children who were brainwashed (for lack of a better word) into testifying to sexual abuse -- from what I've read -- suffer the same consequences of victims of actual abuse. And they remain convinced that they were abused.

I noted on another thread that this is probably the reason Gerald Amirault can't get a break. When the subject of parole or leniency for him comes up, local talk radio gets lots of calls from his purported "victims" arguing, practically in tears that they are not lying. Naturally, since they are in fact telling the truth as they have been led to "remember" it, they are very convincing. Altogether heartbreaking.

And the instigators of those interview techniques are apparently all still free to come up with new "helpful" ideas.

Thanks for the heads-up. I will be watching. A miscarriage of justice almost never is admitted by those prosecutors or others that commit them. Democrat Reno's record is matched in infamy only by a few. Republican Harshberger of Massachusetts is one of them.

Bingo. Mainstream media are still careful to manage news of the crimes of the Clintons to make sure only the tips of the icebergs appear - Monica, etc. - while the bergs themselves remain submerged - wholesale corruption, the evil weirdness of Reno, the treason, and so on.

I dunno, Illinois at least takes the prize for inconsistency. Our current governor stopped executing people because our prosecutors put so many innocent people on death row. Our likely next governor was one of those prosecutors. Until police are required to videotape all interrogations of suspects and subsequent "confessions," bogus convictions (which practically guarantee a conviction) will continue to condemn the innocent. Videotaping co-defendants and child complaining witnesses should be required, too. The only argument against this is "we don't want anyone to see how police extracted this statement."

In my opinion, the whole idea of a fair trial became mixed up in many conservatives' minds with liberal softness and excuse-making for criminals. I think part of this was because what are considered "legal technicalities" seemed to be getting in the way of legitimate prosecutions. Now we are seeing a different trend, where the emphasis is more on reliability of evidence and protecting the factually innocent, rather than seeming to expand rights for the guilty. Videotaping interrogations is a good example of this. If the police are doing it right, then there's no reason not to do it. If they are not doing it right, then the jury -- and the public -- need to know this.
