Well I speak Arabic fluently, can speak Russian (though with a small American accent), and understand a little Chinese. So I would assume they'd want me as a language expert?? Though I've always dreamed of being in a MEU team.

You sound like a shoo-in rfor one of the language schools. The Army runs, or used to run, one of the finest in the world at the Montery Praesidio. I assume the Marine Corps has access to it, or has one similar.

Where did you learn Arabic Russian and a little Chinese?
How many college credits do you have? Depending on your language quals, SATs, high school GPA etc the military may want to pay you to finish your degree in an ROTC program and commission you as an officer.
Please do not enlist until you have COMPLETELY examined the chances of wangling a commission and serving your nation as an officer.
If you are smart enough to learn 3 of the most difficult (and different) foreign languages, you are absolutely "officer material", and will be able to better serve your country, and yourself, as a commissioned officer from the get go.

If you have a college degree, I'd recommend talking to the Department of State. They might be
very interested in talking to you...
Good luck,

Well I speak Arabic fluently
The instructor in a tax class I took has a son in the military who is an Arab language
specialist. He said he hasn't heard much from his son since 9-11...so I assume the demand level is
high and probably won't dimish for years.
I think he said that his son went into the military "at the bottom", became an aviation mechanic,
then managed to make it into and through the school at Monterey (?).
A friend of my family ran the same gauntlet (but in Russian) 20 years ago.
He told me stories of the challenge of keeping up with the demands of the language
school that made graduate school in the sciences seem relaxing by comparison.

Defense Language Institute in Monterey, Kalifornia is good duty. I was sent out there to recalssify my MOS, but couldn't learn Vietnamese, so they sent me back to the Cav.
As far as a service goes, if I had it to do again today, I'd go Corps. I loved the Army when I first joined in '85, but it's gotten so PC and wussed-out, I hardly recognized the Army I left in '96. The Corps seems to be the one service which still has a grasp on what's meant by good, hard training. Furthermore, every Marine is a rifleman first, then they get their speciality. There's something to be said for that. Good luck, bro.

If you know those languages, they might be begging for someone like you now. Be honest about your past. If you are doing drugs, stop now, and I mean NOW, and then keep your mouth shut, and never take them again!! That includes pot or whatever is the craze in your neighborhood, that is an immediate disqualifier for anything.
Start exercising now, too, get in shape before you see your recruiter. Once you sign up, you HAVE to exercise with him, that is a new thing, you have to show up for PT to make sure you are ready!
