Job Opening: Prefer Bilingual- English Only Need Not Apply
5/3/02 | Joe Hadenuf

A young man is looking at the want ads, the job seems to be perfect for him, then as he gets to the bottom of the ad, and it states, "must be bilingual". This is happening right before our eyes. Job after job is being lost, and English speaking Americans are the big losers.

Don’t believe me. Look at the want ads in the Los Angeles Times, the Orange County Register, and any of the big city newspapers and all over the country. Take a look at Monster.com, the giant of on-line job listing for the entire country. Start reading all of the ads. You will be shocked, as you wont qualify for many of them because you don’t speak the right language!

Construction foreman better speak Spanish so they can attempt to communicate with the workers. Insurance claims representatives, people that work in court houses, in social services, police, human resources, sales people, city employees, dispatchers, retail clerks, Department of Motor Vehicles, and on and on and on.

And it’s getting worse folks! And it’s not just Spanish, they are looking for Vietnamese, Chinese, applicants etc etc.

Why are our so-called leaders catering to these foreigners and illegal aliens. Why are we being sold out in our own country? Don’t they realize that if this continues, it will be like a domino effect. Once you start this, there is no return.

There is no longer any damn incentive for any of these people to learn English.

Why can’t these foreigners learn to speak English? Why do many of them have no desire to learn English? Could it be that they no longer need to? Maybe I am crazy, but when I am in public, or in a working situation or even at the market, I find it extremely offensive to have people stand several feet from me carrying on a conversation in a foreign language, on a routine basis.

And its getting down right dangerous, when you need to communicate with someone in a potentially dangerous situation, and they just stand their with the deer in the headlights look.

It's getting crazy, as our politicians and so-called leaders are now even giving speaches in foreign languages, thinking this is cute or in a sick attempt to gain votes.

We are being sold down the river. If this does not stop, this country will become a tower of babble. English is the thread that holds this country together and we are loosing it fast.

Think of your kids. Are they going to demand that they learn Spanish or whatever language to survive? Why can’t they learn our language? Is there an agenda here? Many of these people come here and wave foreign flags, celebrate their own holidays, and now, refuse to even learn English because the job they just got, didn’t require it.

Must be bilingual, English only need not apply.

While I doubt it applies to all of incidents you cite, my employer has customers all across the globe. Several positions require bi/multi-lingual skills. It's no reflection on immigration or US culture. It's a reflection of doing business on the entire planet.

I moved to Miami ten years ago and had to pack up and move further north right away, as ALL jobs in Miami were for bilingual applicants. So I know this is a serious problem.

The Germans, beset by immigrants as we are, recently passed a bill to require all immigrants to speak German within five years or face deportation. With some logical exceptions, like little old ladies living with their families. Huge numbers of Turks have lived in Germany for decades and had to learn German to survive. But since the wall came down, Germany has been flooded with foreigners who collect huge benefits from German government and thumb their noses at German culture.

I'll look for the article stating the new German language rules.

Why do you care what language they use to communicate with each other? As long as they aren't addressing you, what difference does it make?

I am seeing this happening here in NW Indiana. Jobs that I would be well qualified for are demanding bi-lingual (Spanish speaking) candidates.

If you live in South Florida (Dade, Broward and Palm Beach), you either learn Spanish, Yiddish or Brooklynese.

Being bilingual (I know English and Spanish) has helped me immesurably. In my profession (banking) it has opened up more opportunities for better paying jobs.

Advice: Have your kids learn another language, preferably Spanish, Portuguese or Chinese. They will thank you for it.

I think you're crazy if you expect people to carry on private conversations in your preferred language, just for your benefit. What next - are you going to demand that deaf people start speaking English on the subway among themselves?

How about the people down here who work in retail. If it weren't for wealthy and middle class South Americans coming here to shop, the retail industry in South Florida would die.

No, I expect people that come to America to learn English. And private conversations occur in private. I never said anything about private conversations pal. Put both hands on the wheel, as your all over the road.
