The House yesterday overwhelmingly approved President Bush's designation of the Yucca Mountain repository site to store the nation's nuclear waste.

By a 306-117 vote, the House overturned Nevada Gov. Kenny Guinn's veto of the designation, which now goes to the Senate for final approval.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission will have the final say so on this matter.
I've had many discussions with FReepers who are experts in the nuclear energy field.
Politicians can say what they want BUT per exisiting laws ONLY the NRC can authorize the final ok.

Hello, JH2... what we really ought to do is rescind Jimmy Carter's muddle-headed law forbidding the recycling of nuclear waste ( He was "skeered" of "proliferation"- like that really fixed the problem...) and do it like the French have done for almost a quarter-century.

"Problem" solved, like cutting the Gordian Knot...

Added Mr. Gephardt: "We are going to do everything we can to derail this ill-thought-out proposal."

Another poor choice of works from enviromental terrorist Democrat Dick. Most of this nuclear waste is shipped via rail.

"Politics should not trump science," Mr. Markey said. "One hundred-seventeen wise people took the correct position today."

Idiot and liar. Everything Markey does is driven by politics. He isn't smart enough to understand the science. The only science he understands is addition, as in adding up more votes than your opponent in a political contest.

Added Mr. Gephardt: "We are going to do everything we can to derail this ill-thought-out proposal."

Idiot and liar. What ill-thought-out proposal is that? Dick is complaining now after they've been working on the thing for 20 freaking years? And he has proposed no better or reasonable alternatives in the meantime? Where is his support for reprocessing, then? That is the absolute best way to deal with (un)spent fuel, but was his position on that? Oops. He opposed it, the hypocrite.

Ah, yes, Markey and Gephardt, the Cheech and Chong of the politics-pseudoscience nexus.

Bump. I'm glad to see Gephardt is on record in favor of increasing the target list for terrorists who would target nuclear power plants and unsecure waste storage.
