NOBEL PRIZE WINNERS JOIN THE CONDEMNATION OF THE PROPOSED SCIENTIFIC BOYCOTT OF ISRAEL
IMRA ^ | 5-6-02

May 6, 2002

A group of leading professors at the University of Chicago, joined by scientists from around the world has initiated a petition in response to calls for a European boycott of research links with Israel. The anti-boycott petition condemns the boycott calls and urges scientists to foster and develop further scientific ties with their Israeli colleagues. By now, more than 1900 professors and researchers from all over the world have signed the anti-petition and signatures continue to arrive. The list of signatories includes many world class scientists, respected leaders in their fields of research, among them Nobel Laureates, Fields medalists (the most prestigious prize in mathematics), members of American National Academy of Sciences and members of national academies of sciences in other countries. This is an astonishing show of unity and support for Israel among scientists.

An editorial in the United Kingdom's "Nature", the leading scientific journal, noted that "Such boycotts are misguided and should be opposed in favour of constructive initiatives."

The Simon Wiesenthal Center, a leading Jewish human rights NGO, with 400,000 constituent families has endorsed the counter-campaign led by distinguished academicians and is carrying the petition online.

"Unfortunately the European-led efforts to sever research links with Israeli Institution of Higher learning, is only part of a more sweeping effort to isolate and delegitimize the Jewish State", said Rabbi Abraham Cooper, associate Dean of the Simon Wiesenthal Center.

Please, find below the text of the petition and a partial list of signatories. The complete list of signatures is available at the petition website.

THE ANTI-BOYCOTT RESPONSE:

WE ARE CONCERNED

The nation of Israel is going through a difficult time. Its very existence is being targeted by daily murderous terrorist attacks. Hundreds of innocent people, women and children have been killed by homicide bombers in the recent months. At the same time anti-Semitic attacks have become a daily occurrence in Europe. These developments pain us and concern us.

We are aware that some European academics have called for a cultural and scientific boycott of Israel. We believe that this call is immoral, dangerous and misguided, and indirectly encourages the terrorist murderers in their deadly deeds. The government of Israel has the right and the duty to protect its citizens against terror. We sincerely hope that upon further reflection these scientists will understand the dangers of their request. We also call upon all our colleagues to express their support of the people of Israel in these trying times by fostering and developing scientific ties with their colleagues from the State of Israel.

This confirms my long-held conviction that pointy-headed liberals, no matter what IQ they boast, are basically dimwits.

I wasn't even aware there had been a call to boycott Israel by world scientists. Those who joined that petition can consider themselves outed as brothers and sisters to those vicious scientists who served Hitler so well.

Only the Ruropeans would be stupid enough to boycott some of the most brilliant research scientists in the world. I guess one era of Dark Ages wasn't enough for them...

Not to mention the fact that a very "disproportionate" number of Nobel laureates just "happen to be" Jewish.

If ya can't beat 'em, envy and trash 'em, Euro-Nazis, regardless of their vital contributions to the world's health and overall scientific advancement....

Minor corrections:

Abdus Salam, a Muslim, shared the 1979 Nobel prize for Physics with Glashow and Weinberg. I know it doesn't change the point, but to exclude such a notable name looks suspicious.

I don't believe that Sir Peter Medawar was himself a Muslim, or Niels Bohr himself a Jew.

Scientists didn't learn anything from what happened to the Church when it got involved in science. No better way for people to distrust your science than to get involved in politics. The proposed boycoot was a stupid idea.

It was, no doubt, an oversight.

I suppose it would depend on the definition of Muslim. If we were to go by that of the Taliban, then none of these Nobel Prize winners could be Muslim. If we were to define Muslim as someone whose parentage was, at some point, Muslim, regardless of personal religious devotion, then, if Medawar's Lebanese father was a Muslim or born into a Muslim heritage, then Medawar could be so considered. If the latter, then this is a gimme to the list of Muslim Nobel Prize winners (including Albert Camus who seemed to have been placed there for supporting Algerian causes; that is, even less a Muslim than Cat Stevens).

As far as Niels Bohr:
His mother, Ellen Adler Bohr, came from a wealthy Jewish family prominent in Danish banking and parliamentary circles.

Niels Bohr was indeed Jewish. His mother was Jewish (which is what counts), his father was not. If your mother is a Jew, you are a Jew. Very simple :).

Niels Bohr's father was Christian Bohr and his mother was Ellen Adler. Christian Bohr was awarded a doctorate in physiology from the University of Copenhagen in 1880 and in 1881 he became a Privatdozent at the university. Late in the same year he married Ellen, who was the daughter of David Adler, a Jewish politician with a high standing in Danish political and commercial life. Christian and Ellen had three children. The eldest was Jenny born in 1883 in the mansion which David Adler had owned opposite Christiansborg Castle where the Danish Parliament sat. Ellen's mother had continued to live in this house after her husband David Adler died in 1878 and Ellen had gone back to her mother' home to have her child. Two years later Niels was born on his mother's 25th birthday in the same stately home, Ellen again having returned to her mother's house for the birth of her child. The third child of the family, who went on to become a famous mathematician, was Harald Bohr who was two years younger than Niels.

I believe that Camus was a non--muslim resident of Algeria, and that Corey and Medawar are/were Christians (Corey an Arab Christian) by family background and baptism anyway. Several of the "Jews" on your list were either converts to Christianity and/or half Jewish (like Niels Bohr) and Christian by baptism and upbringing. (Many scientists of Christian background are nonbelievers, of course. However, a good number of scientists are believing and practicing Christians--there are estmates of 40% for the US. Many Jewiish scientists similarly have no visible connection to Jewish institutions or communities.)

Despite all this, my quibbles have actually helped your case, since I wiped out around half of the muslims from your list, and only a few Jews. And even in the case of the Jews I removed from your list, you can count them as part of the contribution of the Jewish people as a whole to the Nobel Prize winners' group, since they were of Jewish descent.

On a more important note: scientists and others should INCREASE their collaborations with and support of both Israel and Serbia, to spit in the face of the muslim shill pseudo-intellectuals and their islamic pets, who DARE to dictate to the scientific and academic communities!!!!
