Truck driver indicted in crash that killed DJ

05/20/2002

From Staff and Wire Reports

A Dallas County grand jury has indicted the driver of a tractor-trailer rig that was involved in a freak accident last March that killed a radio station morning show host.

Linden Berry, 40, was charged with negligent homicide. He faces six months to two years in jail if convicted.

Radio host John LaBella had just finished his morning shift at KMEO-FM (96.7) when the March accident occurred on Interstate 30.

A portion of a forklift assembly atop the tractor-trailor catapulted onto the car when the too-tall load struck the top of the Fort Worth Avenue bridge over I-30.

Mr. LaBella, 51, died instantly when the mast of the forklift hit his vehicle. Mr. LaBella was co-host of the popular "Morning Zoo" on KZEW-FM (97.9) for more than a decade. Since late 1998, he had been the morning host for soft-oldies station KMEO-FM Arlington.

Investigators said Mr. Berry did not have the special license required to drive the type of truck involved in the accident.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Thanks, Meek. I was a fan of LaBella's, and yes, I remember the old Zoo - they had great bumper stickers.

Best regards and don't let the dentists get you down. (May Osama bin Laden suffer all eternity, strapped in a sadistic dentist's chair, enduring endless root canals!) :^)

Truck driver indicted in crash that killed DJ ...

Tragic ... but what's the point here? This type of headline is not that unusual ... am I missing something?

Labella was a big name in Dallas, going back to the '70s. Most of us here grew up listening to Labella & Rody on the Morning Zoo, which is why it's such a big deal in Dallas. BTW, John Rody is now big into Internet marketing and has a website where fans can hear replays of old KZEW broadcasts. It's at www.itsthezoo.com if anyone wants to check it out.

LaBella was a big name in Dallas (take your word for it) but he is/was virtually unknown elsewhere. That does not lessen the tragedy of his unneccessary death, but it does explain why the headline puzzled the poster to whom you responded.
