PAPER: Rock Creek Park Predator Interviewed by Police Investigating Levy Death Thu May 23 2002 12:52:01 ET

D.C. Metropolitan Police Department officials investigating the death of Washington intern Chandra Levy have interviewed a man serving a 10-year prison sentence for attacking two women in Rock Creek Park last year, ROLL CALL DAILY is planning to report on Thursday.

MORE

D.C. Metro Police investigators have "talked to" Ingmar Guandeque, who was arrested in July 2001 after attacking two females (one in May and one in July) who were jogging along the Broad Branch trail in Rock Creek Park. Levy's decomposed body was found Wednesday along the Broad Branch trail in a heavily wooded area.

A second official close to the Levy investigation said that while Guandeque was interviewed after Levy's disappearance last year, investigators are now taking a closer look at him since the intern's body was discovered.

"Clearly there are some coincidences and links -- just because of the proximity of where he [committed his crimes]," said a source close to the investigation.

ROLL CALL's Amy Keller reports: Guandeque, who lived on the 1400 block of Somerset Place Northwest, was arrested last summer and sentenced in February 2002 to two concurrent terms of 10 years' imprisonment for a pair of assaults of female joggers in the Broad Branch section of the park.

The first attack occurred in mid-May 2001, at 6:30 p.m., about two weeks after Levy disappeared. In that case, Guandeque came upon an unnamed female jogger, attacking her from behind while brandishing a knife.

LOL! Would that be Darrell or his other brother Darrell, (really I think it's Viryl sp?)

Darrell the convict or Viryl the cop in California that shot himself in the butt at a park showing off his service revolver.

I can't decide if the Condit's are really the Clampetts in disguise or not. Though that might be an insult to the Clampetts!

I don't pretend to know the facts either, but I keep hearing that her friends, and family say she would not go jogging alone and that she wore jogging shoes not tennis shoes when she did work out at the gym. I don't believe Chandra went to that park alone.
Some cab companies keep records don't they? I guess it depends on the dispatch method, but I know that some do. I think she went to this park with someone in a car, or else she went to meet someone there by cab. Ah heck, I think Condit had something to do with this, lets be honest here, but of course, I don't know for sure.

Forensics can now find blood that is not visible to the eye. It could be blood from years and years ago. They have great technology now, so if there is blood anywhere, they will find it! You are making some great points, and I agree with you.
As I stated above, the reporter says she doesn't think the DC Police think the guy in jail had anything to do with this, but I guess you never know.

I'm sure the DC police have to question the guy again to cover all their bases, (Hmmmm... I can't believe I said DC Police and cover all their bases in the same sentence)!, anyway, I'm in agreement with you and the reporter. This guy that's locked up sounds like a kook but not the kook they're looking for this time around.

As far as the blood, I know forensics are amazing. Don't you think though, that had she been shot, there would be a bullet hole in her clothing? There apparantly isn't one in the skull. And, if she were stabbed there would be a knife slash in the clothing and blood stains. Or had her throat been cut it would have bled terribly and I would think the naked eye could see stains even at this late date. Gruesome I know, sorry!

I'll take that bet.

Deal! If the coroner says suicide you donate to FR, if they say homicide I will. The odds are against you though. The best numbers I could find from the CDC show a suicide rate of 6.5 per 100k per year for young white women, a homicide rate of 3.2. The odds from the beginning greatly favor suicide. All at once she lost her job, her lover (a real jerk), and had to move back home, which is enough motivation for a suicide. She was a high achiever/big expectation type. If she chose suicide she's more likely than average to succeed. Also, we're talking about the DC police here, they couldn't find the body until it was handed to them. Even if it was homicide they're probably not smart enough to connect the dots. Good luck to ya!

You might be Tom and you might be mad, but surely you know that Condit had nothing to do with Chandra's demise.

Don't you?

I don't think the killer wanted any screaming or struggling. This is why I would favor a blow to the base of the skull or strangulation by garrote in the car. Both quick and lethal with little or no bleeding and no traceable weapon.

"Chandra disappeared middle of the day"

Actually, her whereabouts are unknown from about 1 o'clock in the afternoon of that day. Nobody knows when the murder actually occured. It could have been at 3 in the morning for all we know.

"Knapsack as in "Valdaree, valdara?"

It took me a minute, but I figured out what you meant! Probably one of a very few who caught this... Yeah, that kind of knapsack.

This is a question from the ozone layer but here goes.

Who found Chandra? Was this turtle hunter identified by name to the publc?

The answer to your premise is "maybe" and "maybe". As to your conclusion, My answer is: Why should I accept your statement without any evidence. For me do so, I might indeed be mad. In last night's thread, you kept raising the same point, but without support, it's a road that didn't go anywhere. Is this some kind of X-files event? Be seein' ya', Fred.

You better start saving your money. They found a crack in her head; unless she rammed herself in a tree and somehow managed to throw herself down a ravine and cover herself up with leaves and shrubs before she died, you are surely going to lose.

Your stats might very well be correct but the premise behind them and the conclusions you draw from them are shaky at best. I mean, it would be nice if simple statistics could solve cases like this but at the very least you have to put some thought behind the numbers in order to come up with anything meaningful. For instance, it would probably be relevant to find out what percentage of suicides go out into unfamiliar woods and then kill themselves in such a way that their body won't be found for over a year. And also how many do it right after packing their bags getting ready to go on a trip. Plus there is the lack of a suicide note or anything else that might indicate why she would commit suicide. How many suicidal women do that? Maybe some would, such as a complete loner, but she was hardly that and i can't imagine she would be so callous towards her parents and friends as to put them through the agony of not knowing what really happened to her. I think when you put all that into your calculations the ratio between suicide/murder would change significantly.

A couple people on this thread have talked about Chandra being dragged 200 to 300 yards by her assailant. That's the length of two / three football fields! What assailant would/could drag somebody that far, alive or dead?? Not practical IMO.
