The problem which nation states now face is that of assymetrical warfare.

Who do we hit and how hard do we hit if we experience homocide bombings in the U.S. ? Do we just suck it up, as India seems advised to do by the world community ? Israel can hit back at dens of terrorists because Israel knows where they originate and the limitations, up to now, of what the terrorsts have in their inventory.

We are all about to enter a perplexing world, a world of the non-peace and the un-war.

On a positive note, a few years of nuclear fall (light case of nuclear winter) should shut the global warming chicken littles up for a while...........

Or Musharraf may be quite willing to see limited clashes begin in hopes of provoking international intervention in Kashmir, much as Yasser Arafat hopes to draw outside powers into his conflict with Israel.

The scale is very different, and *both* sides have nuclear capability. I don't see this strategy working. I don't think India will stop once they start. Musharraf isn't playing with fire, he's playing with nitroglycerin.

How come when one country or group of people fights another, no matter where in the world, it's always our fault?

a foreseeable war that the United
States has done too little to prevent.

How very unilateral of you.  Sometimes the only
way to settle contentions is by whoever is left
standing.

This comment annoys me. What are we supposed to do, tell them, "Now, boys, play nice"? The US is not and should not be the world's police, nor are we everyone's parents.

I recognize that a war between these countries would have consequences for the US, but we are not their rulers, nor directly in control of their actions. I really wish we could just let them duke it out between themselves and perhaps have the US go in afterwards and pick up the pieces.

Every nation whose butt we kick, afterwards become our allies, since the Revolutionary War, and they prosper. England and Spain in the 18th & 19th Century. Germany, Japan, and Italy in the mid-20th. Russia becoming one as we speak. The best thing that could happen to Islamic countries is a serious beat-down.
