Combat Engineers. Some tough dudes. My father was a combat engineer in Patton's 3rd. Half the time they were commandos, what we would now call Special Forces. They'd go ahead of the front lines, secure beachheads on the rivers, build the bridges, wait for the regular forces to cross the river, disassemble the bridges, go ahead of the front line to the next river, and do it all over again. Funny thing was, the regular troops didn't realize that they were crossing the same bridges over and over again. If the Allies were to be forced into a rapid retreat they would have been slaughtered.

The regular troops didn't respect them. Thought the engineers spent their time doing construction while they did the fighting. The combat engineers did their fighting in the midst of the enemy. They didn't take prisoners, by the way.

My father is 77 years old, and his war experience still affects him. If you are standing too close when you wake him up he will knock you on your ass.

He was also ignored when the Army passed out postwar medals. In 1996, after former U.S. Sen. Hank Brown called the Pentagon, he got his POW medal. In spite of governmental neglect, he still loves his country. What else to expect from our draft-deferment "lawmakers"? They have more important things to worry about, like passing more laws and getting re-elected and attending the next cocktail party. Can't expect them to care about guys like this.
