What are there, a billion and a quarter people living on the Indian subcontinent? There's a big difference between the "death of the Indian subcontinent" and 20 million dead.

I believe the "death of the subcontinent" was referring to radioactive contamination of the Himalayan water sources for most of the area's population. This would indeed be devastating.
