I am retired from the military, so I know of what I speak. There is a section of military law known as the "Laws of Armed Conflict", which we call LOAC. All US military personnel are required to train in LOAC annually. I've had 22 annual LOAC sessions.
Here is a short course in LOAC:

- Military Aircraft (Except for Military Medical Aircraft)
- Infrastructure Supporting Military Operations
- Works and Installations Containing Dangerous Forces Identified by 3 Bright Orange Circles of Equal Size on Same Axis
- Civilians
- Chaplains
- Medical Personnel and Facilities (Marked by Red Cross, Crescent Lion, or Sun on White Background)
- Hospital and Safety Zones (Oblique Red Brand on White Background)
- Prisoner or War Camps (Marked by PW or PG Signs)
