I call the present system “Post–Constitutional America.” As I sometimes put it, the U.S. Constitution poses no serious threat to our form of government

For all you victims of government education/indoctrination, remedial Civics 101 is in session.

One of my favorite Sobran pieces. Posted to FR previously, but always worth an occasional repost for the sake of those who haven't read it before.

Yeah -- the old threads are locked. Many have not seen it, and many more will not read past the title before they fire off responses in the vein of: "You un-American traitor. How could you post this? I am free! I am free to chose my new Lexus in any color I want!" etc, ad nauseum, ad infiniteum.

Thanks, I'm one of the ones who hadn't read this brilliant little gem before (Sobran gets an A certificatin from me in cut, quality, and clarity) and I appreciate it being posted.

The lack of civic education in America's educational system is INTENTIONAL. There will not be a re-awaking amongst the populace, therefore America is doomed to communism. The last possibility for freedom I saw in our history was when the League of Nations was aborted.

I agree.

There will not be a re-awaking amongst the populace, therefore America is doomed to communism.

I hope you are wrong.

The last possibility for freedom I saw in our history was when the League of Nations was aborted.

That was the last time the congresscritters sounded off like they had a pair. Unfortunately, the Fabian socialists, the Gramscians and their fellow travelers never give up. The cancer it rotting the US from the inside out, from the top on down.

A great piece. It also explains why Conservatives, as much as a liberals are a problem. They are quite willing to ignore the Constitution when it suits their needs, creating a ratchet to oblivion in cahoots with liberals. As much reviled as the libertarians are (Hannity for example went ballistic with Brown),they are more likely to uphold the Constitution. Without it, we are doomed.

"A republic if you can keep it"

We couldn't.
Why are human beings so fond of authoritative power???

Any way, thanks for the post. My kidlets will see it this summer.

I consider myself to be a Constitutionist. That means I share vastly more common ground with libertarians than I do with republicans.

This forum has become increasingly hostile to libertarians of late, and more recently is becoming that way for Constitutionists.

Thank you for taking the time to post this. I have copied it to my hard drive for sharing with others who aren't FReepers (yet!!)... Sobran is generally very good but, even he, had outdone himself with this piece. It should be required reading for ALL who wish to enter the political arena as well as those who are already there! As a matter of fact, I think I'll be sending this along to ALL of my congresscritters (on the state and local levels!)...

Thanks again for posting!

"A republic if you can keep it"

It is nearly gone.

Why are human beings so fond of authoritative power???

It seems to be an evolutionary process. The further removed US citizens are from the frontier days, e.g. pain, suffering, adversity, the more they expect to be shielded from those factors. The nanny-state is more than willing to engage in the Faustian exchange of liberty for security.

Any way, thanks for the post. My kidlets will see it this summer.

Home schooling in Civics? Outstanding. Education is the only hope. Remember this:

“It does not take a majority to prevail…but rather an irate, tireless minority, keen on setting brushfires of freedom in the minds of men.”
-- Samuel Adams

“One man with courage is a majority.”
-- Thomas Jefferson

“The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.”
-- Edmund Burke

The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth becomes the greatest enemy of the State.
– Dr. Joseph M. Goebbels

“In a time of universal deceit, telling the truth is a revolutionary act."
- - George Orwell

Good idea, sending it to the parliment of whores. Think twice about that though, word might get back to Ashcroft about your un-American activities.
