The media has been full of statements from critics of the Bush Administration for not taking forceful actions to negate the 9/11 attacks. The vocal detractors include the former co-president herself, Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-NY). Clinton stood up before the Senate and held up a newspaper with the headline Bush knew. Clinton asked, The president knew what? A fair question. Another fair question is What did the former co-president know, and when did she know it.
Did she know that an Iraqi agent was apprehended in the Philippines in 1995 with plans to blow up US airliners, and subsequently disclosed a plot to crash commercial jets into Washington? Did she know that, also in 1995, the Clinton Administration passed up the chance to apprehend Osama bin Laden with Sudans help? If she had read Time Magazine in December 1998, she would have known that bin Laden planned attacks on New York and Washington to answer the hapless Clinton missile strikes against him in Afghanistan. Was she aware that the FAA had warned the airlines? Was she alert enough to advise the co-president, or the vice president, that we should not be concerned with racial profiling and go after the plotters in our midst--instead of the vast right (white)-wing conspiracy of citizen militias and Christian extremists?
As co-president, was she aware of the September, 1999, CIA report concerning an Al Qaeda attempt to hijack commercial aircraft and crash them into the Pentagon or other government buildings? Werent the warnings enough for her to advise the co-president to abandon open borders, protected minorities, and other Global Village concepts--and start making security checks before issuing visas? Did she, at any time between 1995 and 2001, take steps to caution Bill, or Al Gore, about the terrorist threat? And if she did, why didnt Clinton-Gore take steps to warn and protect American citizens in 1995, 1998, 1999, or at any time before January, 2001?
One should assume that Hillary and the other Democrats, who have repeatedly voted against intelligence, military and national security spending in the Congress, are at last truly concerned about the protection of US citizens from fanatical attacks, and are not just attempting to make political points in an election year. Shouldnt one?
