Report: Al Qaeda Tells U.S. to Get Ready for Attack
abcnews.com | 6/2/02 | Reuters

CAIRO (Reuters) - The pan-Arab daily al-Hayat published Sunday what it said was a statement from an al Qaeda spokesman warning the United States to get ready for another attack.

"What is coming to the Americans will not, by the will of God, be less than what has come," the newspaper quoted al Qaeda spokesman Sulaiman bu Ghaith as saying in a statement.

"So beware, America. Get ready. Get prepared. Put on the safety belt," he said in a statement al-Hayat said was published on the www.alneda.com Web site.

The Web site, which has in the past regularly carried news on Afghanistan and statements it said came from Taliban leaders, could not be accessed immediately by Reuters.

The site published a statement in April it said was from Taliban leader Mullah Mohammad Omar.

Bu Ghaith, a Kuwaiti-born cleric who emerged as an al Qaeda spokesman after the Sept. 11 attacks on New York and Washington, said al Qaeda would continue to hit Americans, Jews and their targets, either "individuals or institutions."

He cited what he described as America's anti-Muslim policies in countries such as Somalia, Sudan, Indonesia and the Philippines as a reason for targeting the United States. He also complained Israel had acted against the Palestinians for 50 years with "American blessing."

Osama bin Laden and his al Qaeda network are blamed for masterminding the Sept. 11 attacks that killed 3,000 people.

U.S.-led coalition forces are hunting for the remnants of Taliban and al Qaeda fighters in Afghanistan, after launching an offensive in October that ousted the Taliban from power.

I think we should be studying the illustrations in Arab calendars.

So beware, America. Get ready. Get prepared. Put on the safety belt - this is an odd statement coming from a terrorist organization.

Terrorism (or guerrilla warfare if you prefer) depends on surprise attacks so if an attack is imminent there is silence.
After and attack they are many false alarms, this is to cause confusion and to give their allies in media (Dan et al) and government (hillary et al) ammunition against the target country (USA).

I'm not sure how much credibility to give this report since it's coming out of an Egyptian newspaper, but it certainly doesn't sound good. They have had several months to plan another attack.

"He cited what he described as America's anti-Muslim policies in countries such as Somalia, Sudan, Indonesia and the Philippines as a reason for targeting the United States."

What is missing here? Here's a guy, whose group has been expelled from their bases, whose patrons have been overthrown in their own country, whose leaders are either dead, captured or on the run and he doesn't mention THAT as a reason to attack the US.

Blamed for masterminding the Sept. 11 attacks?

How about guilty as sin... not only for the planning, but also the execution.

Me either!

Just in case, I've moved my wife and thirteen children into the bomb shelter and I'm moving in with my girlfriend.

I am wondering if anyone is looking at the possibility that while we watch for Arab terrorists their non-Arab associates may be the nest attackers. May Philippinos or Indonesians associated with Al Quaeda. Lots of Indochinese around here, newly arrived and Illegals, but who cares? The local police are busy ticketing senior citizens to raise money for the annual policeman's ball.

No doubt in my mind. But Reuters has a "thing" about the word terrorist...

I can't understand why the U.S. sending mixed signals. Yesterday at West Point the President was talking tough about agressively going after the terrorists but at the same time he's sending Tenet back to the Middle East to negotiate - yet again. Clearly, the al Qaeda and the Palestinian fights are one and the same.

the terrorists are smarter than the voters and media consumers

I remember a series of similar threats last year. In at least one, ex-Afghanistan supremo Omar said that the next attacks against America would come (I forget the exact words) quite soon.

I suppose that Dick Chaney knew what he was talking about when he said that additional attacks are inevitable. However, the threats may indicate that they are not ready to pounce yet, and are still in pure braggart mode.

It's a diversion. They are trying to put the squeeze on to delay THIS..........

Dear President Bush:

Start the bombing HERE:

Part of a 814,000 square meter complex outside Baghdad, and
begun while sanctions have been in effect, construction of
the Al Salam Palace was completed in September, 1999.

I agree. I generally pay very close attention when Cheney and Rumsfeld speak. Cheney took that position very early on. I recall him saying that a more devastating attack on the U.S. would happen where even more people would die. I think he made a statement to that effect just a couple of days after 9/11.

Because fear is their most effective weapon. The warning will affect more people for a longer period of time than an actual attack. (they can also monitor our preparation for such an attack) I'm going to do what I did after September 11........get a flight to New York, go to the Empire State Building, a play and other highly populated target areas!! If they keep us scared, they win!
