"If I had heard that people are dying from Ritalin, I would have never given Matt the first pill" - Lawrence Smith whose son died from Ritalin.
It all started for Matthew in the first grade. The school social worker in Berkley, Michigan kept calling us in for meetings. One particular morning... the school social worker said that if we wouldn't consider getting Matt on Ritalin for their diagnosis of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, that social services (child protective services) could charge us for neglecting his educational and emotional needs. My wife and I were scared of the possibility of losing our children, if we did not comply.

Very interesting article. I had heard about this but never saw it in such stark terms as presented in the article. Posted only part of the article to keep space short on the board.

My wife and I were scared of the possibility of losing our children, if we did not comply. The moral of this story? Vote school choice canidates. Don't let "the village" own your kids.

My wife and I were scared of the possibility of losing our children, if we did not comply. Ironic, isn't it. That is exactly how they lost their child.

I had not heard that ritalin could cause death. I did know it had side effects.

The National Foundation for Gifted and Creative Children was formed over 30 years ago. The main goal of The Foundation was to get much needed information to the parents of gifted children. The need is still there. Many gifted children are being destroyed in the public education system. Many gifted children are being falsely labeled with ADD as well as ADHD. And many parents are unaware their child/children could be potentially gifted. The Foundation's main objective is to reach out and help these precious children. The National Foundation for Gifted and Creative Children is a non-profit, non-sectarian, organization. Please feel free to download the complete packet of information provided by the Foundation as well as the informative news articles.

BIG time homeschool bump! If I ever have any children, I don't see how in good concious I could enroll them under our current education system.

I didn't notice which state these people were residents of, but I have to say that I have never, ever heard of a school district in the state of Texas or a district's representative ever threatening legal action against parents for not medicating a child for ADD. We've lived in two different school districts. Now, I'm sure parents have been advised to consider it, but I've never heard of anyone being threatened with legal action. That's what I find to be so frightening-- aside from the fact that the medical establishment would ever consider medicating a child with something that could do permanent damage.

I am reluctant to say this, but that is crazy, too.
I may have to go to another site. Everybody in these posts is nuts.

I wonder how long it will take the ambulance chasers to cash in on Ritalin. I would think that government agencies, schools and their employees who push the use of Ritalin are going to be wide open to lawsuits for Ritalin injuries and deaths.

a district's representative ever threatening legal action against parents for not medicating a child for ADD. They didn't. They called the Social Services to do it for them. They brought in the big guns to do the dirty work!

they called in social services
That will scare the h-e-double-hockeysticks out of anyone. I have heard, though, that, in some states, school nurses have been prescribing it for kids. Anyone know about this? (How could a nurse prescribe?)
To: BJungNan
PS....You'll find the majority of gifted children are boys.
It has to do with the theory of testesterone levels in the mothers system during pregnancy.
Stress is shown to increase the level of testesterone in the mother, leading to more and more of these gifted boys being born now that females have left the home for employment.
If you have a son on this drug, please, take the time to have him tested for the possibility of being gifted, rather than mentally disabled.
My son was labled by the school with ADD, as well as learning disabled. He turned out to be one of these special gifted children.
We started homeschooling right away rather than drug him to slow him down.
By the time he was 8 years old, we no longer needed to teach him reading. He read better than any adult I know. He read the encyclopedia just for the fun of it. His photographic memory has made our job as homeschooling parents a lot easier than we thought.
He may not be a football player when he grows up, but he'll be the next Bill Gates or Carl Sagen !!

some states, school nurses have been prescribing it for kids. Anyone know about this? (How could a nurse prescribe?) Remember, it takes "the village" to raise your child.
