Jagger 'To Be Knighted'
BBC ^ | 6/8/02

Posted on 06/08/2002 7:30:07 PM PDT by marshmallow

Mick Jagger is to receive a knighthood for services to music in the Queen's Birthday Honours next weekend, according to newspaper reports.

Earlier this year, the Rolling Stones singer claimed Prince Charles was shocked he had not even received an MBE while Paul McCartney, Elton John, Cliff Richard and Bob Geldof had already been knighted.

But the 58-year-old was put forward for the honour by Tony Blair, says the News of the World.

The prime minister covered the Stones' Honky Tonk Woman and Brown Sugar with his group the Ugly Rumours as a student at Oxford.

Jagger, an old friend of Princess Margaret, was asked to play at last weekend's Buckingham Palace Jubilee concert but refused because of tour commitments.

A 12-month Stones world tour starts in September this year and will consist of 32 dates in the United States and Canada, before heading to Europe, Australia, Mexico and the Far East in 2003.

The band, who last toured in 1999, are also hoping to play their first ever concert in China.

A retrospective CD of their greatest hits from 1963 to the present day will be released to coincide with the tour.

The name of the tour will be revealed with the name of the new album.

Tour promoter Michael Cohl has said the shows will be "a spectacular music event" and described the tour as "the most ambitious undertaking the Stones have ever taken upon themselves".

What kind of BS title is this?

Who's she gonna "knight" next? The kid at the drive through for "excellence in fry quality and packaging"

(And the Britts honestly wonder why we laugh.. )

Well,... England has adopted socialism...

But Mick Jagger is a consummate capitalist. Went to business school, IIRC.

My apologies. I missed that one.

Any damage or word on the cause of it?

Ahhhh... poor Mickey. He is the last to be asked to perform, the last to be knighted behind such brilliant folks as Elton, Paul, etc. That EGO has PRIDE! QE: Mickey, puhleeze? MJ: Well, Eeliz, lemme sleep on it...

I like the use of the word "service". From where I sit, the only thing Jagger has serviced is his own desires and pleasures and he's been handsomely remunerated for it.

I equate the word "service" with the desire to help or assist others, usually at some cost to oneself. Apparently a life of self-indulgence is what Blair and the Royals consider to be the ideal, now.

"Mick Jagger is a consummate capitalist"

Does that mean that Jagger is not a leftist, as are so many entertainers?

He certainly flirted with the Left at in the 60s, but hasn't really been overtly political since then. Despite the fact that he's a libertine, I've read comments from him on occasion that suggest a rather conservative streak. Dunno how deep it runs or if that's just for public consumption.

In any case, he's never been a socialist.

"I saw her today at the reception,
"Her dubbin' sword in her hand...
"I knew she would make a connection
"With the shoulders of that thick-lipped man...

"You can't always get what you want,
"You can't always get what you want,
"You can't always get what you want
"But Mick, if you try sometime
"You just might find, just might find, just might find...
"You get what you need...."

I heard Prince Charles was swabbing out one of his ears and a spark flew out and hit a tapestry.

Seriously, I haven't heard any more about it.

"Their Satanic Majesty's Request". That's their best album.

And you have the nerve to say this in public? The critics and the self appointed connoisseurs hated it, still do. I don't know if if I'd regard it as their greatest (I'd vote for Exile myself) but it is good!

Exile and Sticky Fingers are the top Rolling Stones albums. It's been mostly downhill since Mick Taylor got the boot. "Some Girls" being the exception.

SWAY
(M. Jagger/K. Richards)

Did you ever wake up to find
A day that broke up your mind
Destroyed your notion of circular time

It's just that demon life has got you in its sway
It's just that demon life has got you in its sway

Ain't flinging tears out on the dusty ground
For all my friends out on the burial ground
Can't stand the feeling getting so brought down

It's just that demon life has got me in its sway
It's just that demon life has got me in its sway

There must be ways to find out
Love is the way they say is really strutting out

Hey, hey, hey now
One day I woke up to find
Right in the bed next to mine
Someone that broke me up with a corner of her smile, yeah

It's just that demon life has got me in its sway
It's just that demon life has got me in its sway

It's just that demon life has got me in its sway
It's just that demon life has got me...

It's just that demon life has got me...

Saw one of his early recorded interviews. Bright, articulate, well-educated. Almost like he was picked for the job of rock star.

What can I say?! Rock'n'roll's most literate lyricist (or one of the few.) It's a big secret too, since everyone's been focusing on the scandal sheet trivia. His solo albums have great lyrics too.

Heh, I love Ronnie Wood. Mick Taylor was brilliant, but he could also get boring. I think that's why he left (or was asked to leave?) -- he wasn't a match.

You see, what makes the Stones so perfect is that their sum is greater than their parts.

Ronnie always clicks.

Tatoo You is fabulous, and love Voodoo Lounge (especially I Go Wild, Brand New Car, Suck on the Jugular, and Thru & Thru (awesome).

I worked on a chapter of one of my books for two days listening only to Sway. I finally replaced it for my Korn cd. I was trying to make interesting a history of the tariff. I swear, I have written the most interesting discussion of tariffs ever. Alcohol was, of course, helpful.
