Bush Plan's Underground Architects
Washington Post ^ | 06/09/2002 | David Von Drehle and Mike Allen

There was little doubt in the White House that the creation of a Cabinet department would have to be done in secret. That's the preferred style of the Bush administration.

But how secret?

Near-total. In the beginning just four men and a few trusted aides worked on the most ambitious reorganization of the government's national security structure since the creation of the Department of Defense half a century ago.

I knew it, I knew they'd been working on this for a long time. You don't take a man like Ridge and give him a nothing position unless the purpose is to be able to gather information without threatening the agencies. It also kept the suck-ups from distorting the needed information.

Came into my head and I'm sure it's been thought of by others. Has Giuliani's name come up for homeland security. Politically 9it would put rats in a box. They'd either have to cede a lot of oversite/control to the admin or fight Bush and Giuliani about fighting terrorism leading up to the election.

This is a "must read" article.... especially for the RATS.

no doubt about who is in charge.

Secrecy a preferred style. Last time I checked there was a war going on. When Bush came in there was no secrecy. He attempted to enact exactly what he campaigned on. Wiht RATS stonewalling and leaking secrecy seems appropriate.

I hope not. This position is not one that I want a committed Gun-grabber to fill. Thanks anyway. Look, people around here scream that George Bush is a RINO and many of them have this insane need to put the Ultimate RINO in a real position of power.

This is one of the most flattering articles ever written by the Washington Post on the Bush administration. No snideness, just the facts. It highlights the total professionalism and dedication of this administration. And there can be no doubt, that Bush rolled the Democrats, big time.

It also explains why Bush would not allow him to testify on the Hill. This explains why we did not know what he did and that possibly he was doing nothing.

Rudy would be a perfect fit---some are worried about his NY ideas about gun control but GWB, through Justice and Ascroft, have settled that puppy

Yeah, but looking at Ridge you had to know that he wasn't doing "nothing". He wouldn't put up with that. This thing didn't spring up overnight. I'd be willing to bet that it's been on the drawing board since Ridge started.

God, I'm so glad that we have the people in place that we do. This country is going to end up so much better prepared.

Makes you wonder what other projects are being developed. I love the way Bush thinks outside the box.

He has some great helpser too:

According to Card and other sources, the work of the PEOC Group can be traced back to Bush's presidential campaign, when he and his opponent, then-Vice President Al Gore, agreed on the need to bolster the country against terror.
This subject intrigued Cheney, who "did a deep dive" into the available research and theories, Card said.

Bush is a Harvard MBA, Cheney one of the most experienced CEOs in the country. They think big, they think long-range, they are patient men and, as this article shows, they will use secrecy and subterfuge if the situation warrants it. Be very thankful we have serious people running the country. An Al Gore presidency doesn't bear thinking about, does it?
