It is true. WHen I moved here about 4 years ago...the jobs were choice for me....now it's the other way around...course... more and more people have moved to my area then I want to think about....so that makes it even worse. And it continues to get worse....anyone thinking about moving to S Florida...better take a better look at whats going on. We are on water restrictions most of the year..(I thought water was expensive up north!!)...no jobs (articles in the papers say the companies are moving out because their trucks can't get through and it costs them...and becuase their employees are always late due to constant traffic tie-ups and accidents....constant gridlock...(it takes me 20-25 minutes to get to a job 4 miles away) and it's turning into a concrete jungle. Most roads are presently being expanded into 4 or 6 lanes. Specific trees in the county have to be taken down by 2004 cuz they drink water.....even Rush talked about building his own water tower today. (He's near me). Anyway....my point was ...on this thread:

UNEMPLOYED FREEPERS
I pointed out that I went to an open house for a chance at 25 new positions...with the attitude that I was sure I could get one of them. There were over 100 people there easy...(while I was there for that few minutes...more coming all the time)...and when they gave me their questionaire for 'requirements' and how much they pay...I laughed out loud...wow. It is certainly an employers market. I don't expect to get called.

I moved to South Florida from Tennesseee about 6 years ago. I discovered they pay you in sunshine (not money), traffic is terrible, everybody is from New York, and, unless you are on the beach, the weather is hellish. Stayed a year, moved back to Tennessee, been happy ever since. My suggestion: Get out of there!

Oh your in S FL. The employer that layed me off was in Boca Raton. I moved to Orlando on their request -- big mistake. There are NO high tech jobs in Orlando. However it's a growing area so I might have to find a way into the construction industry somehow! Good Luck!

tet might be a crotchety old geezer, but he makes a good point. Hanging out your own shingle is the only way to have any kind of control over your career. Working for yourself means never being fired, but also carries with it the risk of going without work between contracts.

Perhaps your fate is to join up with some fellow out of work Freepers and form a software consulting firm. Heaven knows there is plenty of talent on these boards, and despite the recession, companies have plenty of work, but are unwilling to hire full-timers right now. As the part owner of a consulting group as well as one of it's drones, you would bring in buku bucks.

The risks are considerable but not too great, and the rewards, self evident.
