Among many politicians on the receiving end of Samuel Waksal's largesse, one benefited more than any other: Sen. Hillary Clinton.
The New York Democrat's 2000 Senate bid received a total of $73,000 from Waksal, his two daughters and other relatives and employees of his company, ImClone Systems.
Waksal gave Clinton $36,000 in unregulated soft money contributions during the summer of 2000 just after publicity over ImClone's possible wonder drug, Erbitux, reached its height.
One Waksal soft money gift a $25,000 check to the Democratic Senate Campaign Committee for Clinton's race came Sept. 15, 2000. That was two days after Clinton's Republican opponent, Rick Lazio, challenged her during a televised debate to swear off soft money. The check came eight days before Clinton agreed to do so.
Clinton's staff declined to comment yesterday.
