That's absurd. Nothing whatsoever is gained from peering at planets way out in the nether-regions. Can you name one thing? Satisfaction of blind curiosity is about all I can think of. Now, I will concede some gains have been had from manned trips to the moon, but things like this, and the joke called SETI are an offense to the tax payers.

We may learn something new about our universe. Who can tell what may be the result. I wonder how many people thought that the exploration of the new world a few years back (which finally resulted in the founding of the United States) was also absurd.
Taxpayers? Last time I looked, I was not using a dime of taxpayer money. You can slam SETI all you want. This is ok I really don't care. But you may want to look again at what is being funded and what is not before making those kinds of assumptions.
