Men dictating women's sexuality and defining it for them, placing women in sexual categories from saint to whore, slut to prude.

How could men do this, unless women concurred?

This gives them the tools to categorize/chastize/shame women for either wanting sex "too much" or "not enough" or "not in the proper context".

Well, as I said before, I definitely wanted a mate who was not used goods (and vice versa). If that's what you're talking about, so be it. I think the reality here is that you're working overtime to define men's sexuality!

Hey, forget porn. As Jack T. Chick says, ROCK MUSIC is what we must shun!

How are you measuring "interest in sex" and what is your sample size? One person, two persons?

Is not the preponderance of men buying porn indicative?

Women buy very little of it, no?

You project an agenda on the porn producers and consumers that is not there.

However, you do correctly detect such an agenda in the media. But the media and its consumer, and porn with it's consumer are two intersecting, but distinct groups.

If you set the standards then everyone else is graded on the curve of your benchmark. If you say interest is sex is detemined by _x_ then this becomes the standard for everyone (roughly 6.3 billion people). How are you measuring "interest in sex" and what is your sample size?

I'm not setting standards!!! Just my observation at every stage of my life (and of just about everyone I know) that women spend less of their time in life obsessed with sex than do men.

"What bothers you is that what men fantasize about sexually doesnt' represent the reality of women's sexuality."

No, this is not what bothers me. I have nothing against fantasy. What bothers me is when people dictate to me what my sexuality is or is not or what it should or should not be.

IMO a valid criticism of porn is that it homogenizes sex to the point were indivual sexuality is not only not valued it is not tolerated. It turns into McSexuality a fad or a pretense. [The same thing has happened in food, music, home decor, clothing, etc]

Women have their own forms of fantasy. That is why romance novels are so popular. I'm sure many of them do not reflect the reality of men's sexuality either. As long as it is remains fantasy that's fine.

But what is the criteria you are using for "interest in sex"? You didn't answer that. Also now in your recent pont "interest in sex" has turned into "obssesion with sex". Two different topics.

[The same thing has happened in food, music, home decor, clothing, etc]<P I agree totally with you on this. For me (a Christian), sex should be a measure of the deep love and commitment one has to one's life long spouse. Porn totally devalues that idea.

Sure they do. But no one is dictating that to them either.

I think what bothers you is that some may not approve of what you do sexually, or might not condone what you do, or might not agree with what you do sexually. If you go out and have sex with every guy you date, then I wouldn't condone that, or agree with that or approve of that. That's my right, as what you do is yours. But it would certainly not be a case of dictating to you! You would just be making your own choice.

Don't know about you, but because of this thread, my wife I and looked at a few pictures and she took advantage of me.

Who exploited who? Giggle.

Women are very well paid and if anyone is being exploited, it is the men.

Sorry, I honestly worry about people that find Pornography such a problem. There is something seriously wrong with their personal life, and they must use this as a form of projection.

Don't worry, my daughter in on a super anti-porn kick at the moment. My wife and I just snicker and let her talk.

Good idea. It worked with her mother and father.

Otherwise, she would not be around to bitch about pornography!

Think about it

But if your daughter asked for career advice, surely you would not have her be an aspiring porn star, would you?

If she said she was bored and looking for something interesting, surely you would not recommend her buying porn, would you?

Lorianne: "How are you measuring "interest in sex" and what is your sample size? One person, two persons?:

Starwind: "Is not the preponderance of men buying porn indicative?"

No. It's indicative of men liking porn, not necessarily sex. Women may not need porn to maintain an interest in sex. Why is purchasing porn indicative of an interest in sex? Women have good imaginations. (Also, women by a lot of romance novels which have a lot of sex in them).

Again the standards are being rather arbitrarily set. Do men who don't consume porn have "less interest" in sex than men who do?

"You project an agenda on the porn producers and consumers that is not there. However, you do correctly detect such an agenda in the media. But the media and its consumer, and porn with it's consumer are two intersecting, but distinct groups."

I don't buy that! Porn is a media just like any other. It is communicating ideas and concepts in addition to entertainment. Everything from a Disney movie to porn is communicating concepts and ideas to the public. And it is all subject to criticism in one form or another.

Claiming porn is a different media is a (lame) attempt to exempt porn from free, open criticism and scrutiny. It isn't exempt. Everything in our culture from religion to porn is fair game for criticism/scrutiny!

I've read about the ACLU raking in big bucks from the porno industry but I have no links on hand. Perhaps someone does. Because donations are, I believe, not public record, it is difficult to get a handle on the extent of the support. But common sense tells us who benefits from the ACLU and the porno industry leads the list. Tammy Bruce, the NOW renegade, mentioned Seagrams and the Bronfman family funding NOW and People for the American Way. She kept saying "Follow the money" when she was on C-Span recently. The Seagram heirs are involved in producing not porno but some pretty sleazy stuff. Paying off NOW and funding PFAW is a good investment for them.
