Mysterious Balls Washing Up On Beach
Scientists Unsure What Spheres Are

POSTED: 10:37 a.m. EDT June 17, 2002

HAMPTON, N.H. -- Mysteriously, tens of thousands of dense, grassy-looking balls have washed up on the beach in Hampton.

Beachgoers say they have never seen anything like them, and scientists still are trying to figure out what they are.

Ellen Goethel, a marine biologist who serves on the Hampton Conservation Commission, said at first the balls looked like some man-made material that was rolled up by wave action close to the shore.

But after talking to some fishermen, she decided the balls could be made up of sea grass.

Sometimes it's tough to differentiate between man-made materials and seagrass.

My guess is that they belong to the senators who voted to acquit Clinton after the impeachment trial.

I always go to fisherman to draw up my scientific conclusions.
Evidently they are no big deal, time to move on, go buy a car.

They are fish balls from nets. The shear volume of the number to float nets necissated that a glass blower was on board to make floating devices for the nets. Japaneese fish balls are collector items.

God that sounds weird.

Some balls are held for charity
And some for fancy dress
But when they're held for pleasure
They're the balls that I like best

Ordinary catfish don't usually cough up hair-balls.

To my knowledge only the cold water furcat will but I could be mistaken.;O)
