FCAT Scores Prove Progress [Broward County editors praise Jeb on education; brutally blast Dems!]
Ft. Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel ^ | June 16, 2002 | Editorial board

Edited on 09/03/2002 4:50:40 AM PDT by Jim Robinson. [history]

Critics of Gov. Jeb Bush's "A-Plus" education reform program are at it again.

They don't like standards; they say standards make teachers' jobs too hard. They don't like testing; they say it doesn't prove anything.

But now that 68 schools around the state have received failing grades on this year's Florida Comprehensive Assessment Tests, they're changing their tune. Now they say the failing grades do prove something after all: that the A-Plus plan isn't working.

What hypocrisy.

WOW! This seems like a real trend! I started writing about it this morning in this post:

FL newspapers finding it tougher to criticize Jeb on education

But after reading the above editorial - well, WOW again! Good thing Gov. Bush decided to open a satellite campaign office in Broward County! BTW, Gov. Bush's campaign site is www.jeb.org

These Dems down here are just getting creamed... I'm thinking by the time November rolls around, voters will either vote for Jeb or stay home -- just because it would be too embarassing to vote for these Dem losers.

Correct. If McBride is the nominee the hard-core RATs will stay home because they think he's a closet Pubbie. If Uncle Janet is the nominee the independents and conservative RATs will flock to Jeb. Either way, Jeb wins big! RATs in a lose/lose situation!

Reno's "failure of leadership" remark could apply to her own party, which, during the many years it controlled state politics, allowed the public schools to deteriorate to the point where they became a laughing stock.

Heavens!! This reminds me of the time, many, many moons ago, when the Sun-Sentinel was a conservative paper, in a conservative Broward County. I guess people do want their kids to get an education after all!!

I almost fell over when I read that line -- it's like someone discovered, all of a sudden, that Dems were in charge of this state for 8 years before Gov. Bush. And, what happened in education then? Not much. Gov. Bush has shaken up everyone!

I agree it looks bleak for the rats here in South Florida, but I don't trust them. I am glad Jed is working hard for this election. I hope we have enough people at the polls and they get some answers to what wrong with the new voting machines PBC before Nov. Palm Post was reporting last week rats spin as usual;about not enough money for failing school and needing more teachers.
