I did pleasantly like the San Luis Obispo county area of California. It was very beautiful. Monterrey County also has a lot of natural beauty. The Sierras were awe inspiring.

Well, I considered it part of the LA area because it was a continuous built-up from San Clemente (on the edge of Camp Pendleton) up into Los Angeles. North San Diego County were beautiful places such as Oceanside, Carslbad, Encinitis and Cardiff by the Sea. Actually, that stretch from North San Diego County to Lower Orange County, bysecting Camp Pendleton, is one of the nicest residential areas of California.

Now, lets not be too hasty here...Lets hear this gentleman out. Parts of California and the Arizona Cardinals we can be rid of. Maybe we can convince him to take the Peoples Republic of Massachusetts and select locales like Palm Beach, Florida too.

Ah, I see you missed the northern part of the "continuum." Travel up the 101 fwy from LA and it doesn't stop until you get into Ventura. What a mess, huh? ;)

Actually, I did drive to Ventura and beyond. Ventura's somewhat of a nice town. It seems more Conservative, too, though I can't be sure. I just know that the man I chatted with at the tire store, of whom his business was patching my tire, was very friendly, and we chatted about political issues. Very nice fellow. I even told him about Free Republic.

The Mexican government wants a lot of things it will never get simply because it is too corrupt to let go of its power long enough for the people to prosper.to

Oh, there was one break. There's a low mountain range that you have to cross once you get past the western end of the San Fernando Valley. However, it's only about two miles, and then you've got Thousand Oaks, Oxnard and Ventura.

I agree very much so. Yet, apparently the mainstream media, as well as our government, isn't able to see the obvious and enact measures to end the illegal immigration madness, as well as to put pressure on Mexico to reform itself.

Know it well, used to live there ;-).

Not sure how long it's been since you passed through there, but from Woodland Hills, Calabasas, Agoura, Westlake, and on into T.O, it's now a continuum.

Most parts of Ventura County are, and on into Santa Barbara (Reagan country). Kalifornia has a few "pockets" of conservative islands, but of course, they are in the middle of the mess.

Well gosh, when was P. Buchanan a state governor? Did he ever run for and win any state office? Was he ever in Congress? I'm sure he has an impressive resume; but he still hasn't been an elected leader. But from the looks of it, he has lately became a career politician. G. Bush has run for and won the office of Governor. When Pat runs for, and wins such and office, he'll have that on his resume, but not until!

"I don't know what your vision of Texas is, but it doesn't seem to be anchored in reality"

My vision of Texas is anchored by several things: First, I've lived in several different parts of Texas several different times. Second, I've traveled extensively in Mexico, by bus, car, and backpack. Third, I'm a student of history.

Putting these pieces together, I come up with this: First, the Anglos and Mexicans in that region have a long history of mutual animosity. Secondly, the Mexicans (as recent polling data clearly shows) believe that the SW is morally part of Mexico. They believe that the land was stolen from Mexico by force of arms, and they still reject the idea that the region isn't theirs by right.

As for history, very seldom, if ever, does a massive demographic shift of this sort take place without political upheaval, usually accompanied by violence. As we speak, Anglos in Tx have probably slipped below 50% of the population. In a short time, Mexicans will move above 50% and become the absolute majority in the state. If history is any predictor, this will result in a drastic change in the very fabric of Texan society.

Each time I've moved to Texas, I've been shocked by the change that has taken place since the previous stint there. Mexico is, without a doubt, a corrupt, filthy, narco-republic. With the possible exception of Taxco (and inside the walls of the resorts), I've never seen anywhere in Mexico that I would consider a nice place (clean, safe, etc).

Traveling through Texas, especially the border region, it is clear that the Mexicans are bringing Mexico northward with them. The idea that Texas will remain as it was when the Anglos were the majority is merely whistling past the graveyard. The colonias in the border zone are pure third world.

There is a possibility that Texas won't suffer an upheaval, but will rather settle into a situation similar to post-colonial africa. The majority of anglos will engage in white flight. But, a small anglo minority will remain in most cities, living a rather nice life in walled neighborhoods while the rest of the region outside drifts to its pre-colonial level.

This situation is currently occuring in San Antonio. For all intents and purposes, SA is a Mexican city. But, there is a region in the NW that is mosly post-colonial Anglo neighborhoods. The seem to be happy with the situation.

I've lived in a few third world countries...among the post-colonial ango ex-pats....its not so bad.

The Mexican people are like the Palestinians, he said.

What a self-evidently STUPID statement.

No, the "Aztlan" types see it differently. They consider that they are descended from the indigenous peoples who lived here before the "Conquista". Therefore, it all ought to go back to THEM.

The fact that, with some few exceptions, the population of Mexico is "mestizo"--a mixture of Amerind and European blood--seems to be missing from the argument.

Your point is well-taken in one sense, though: If there ever was a movement to "return" all the lands in the Earth to their "original inhabitants," it would make for some interesting paradoxes.

...they do want the Southwest and they intend on fighting for it.

Well, according to many here on FR, if they become numerous enough they can take over the state government by ballot, and then vote to secede.

And the U.S. would be powerless to stop them.

What a war there will be if someone tries to hand over Texas to mexico!

Not so fast! The "neo-Confederates" here on FR will tell you that if the people of any state want to secede from the Union, they have the right to do so and NO ONE can stop them.

Let's be consistent.

The theme of EVERY POST I've ever seen from you on FR is the same: Bush is Evil.

I think you realize you're in a vanishingly tiny minority here, but as opinions are like *ssholes, you're invariably going to have one, I guess.

I thought the same time driving through San Antonio. The northwest section of town, driving towards the Texas Hill Country, seemed to be the only part of town that wasn't majority Mexican.

And the Mexicans should give the Aztecs their land back ... but, of course, the Aztecs were wiped out ... too late.

On the contrary, the Aztecs and the other pre-Columbian Mexican indigenous populations were never wiped out. In fact, their descendents make up the vast majority of the present-day population of Mexico. That is what gives rise to the entire La Raza/Aztlan mentality. The way they see things, they are the Aztecs.

These individuals do not identify with the Spaniards that landed in Mexico in the 1500's. They identify with the indigenous population of pre-Columbian Mexico and stress, as this link points out, that "85-90% of the Mexican population is of Native blood."

As such, they glorify the Aztecs (although the Spaniards conquered the Aztecs with the help of all the smaller Mexican tribes that were fed up with having their hearts cut out in Aztec religious ceremonies) and villify what they consider "European".

This attitude then gets transferred to anti-Americanism as they view Americans as just another group of "European imperialists".

Are there parts of Mexico in which the people appear more European than Indian? I know that the Mexicans that we've seen in the Atlanta area appear mostly Indian, yet when I was in the El Paso area, many of Mexicans with Chihuahua license plates seemed more European, though there were many Indians.
