I am not optimistic, and yet it has nothing to do with the President. The country is not the president, it is
we the people. Sadly, we the people are still just as polarized and divided as we were in November of 2000 on election day. The whinning, carping, and undermining from all sides continue, despite 9/11 and the war/threats against us. And that's just 1/2 of the country - the rest are asleep and don't even bother to vote. We are at grave risk of falling in upon ourselves in confusion, mistrust, and in-fighting.
We are a house divided against itself.....

Well said - and, btw, thanks for the "positive" thread you started. Every time I see it I think of others I have forgotten to thank - including you!

Says Mr. Ross:
Collapse of the Hyper-Greens
- As technological and agricultural efficiencies soar, the environment will continue to improve in quality.
- Next to freedom (not license), industrial efficiency is, and always has been, the main benefactor of the environment.
- Private, non-coercive ideas for species and habitat preservation will become the norm, edging out the old proscribe/prescribe, jackbooted government methods.
- This is another stealth advance.
- The coercive side of the green movement will decrease in popularity.
- More intelligent, civilized notions will dominate.
- Violent greens will be the exception, not the rule&emdash;and the FBI and other law enforcement agencies will pursue them for what they've become: criminals dressed in green shirts.
- The more successful conservationists and preservationists will employ innovative voluntarism to accomplish more, faster.
- The fanatic green religious left will go on, but in a less totalitarian, neo-theocratic fashion.
- I believe the harsher side of the green movement has already peaked.
- The greens will never again achieve the raw political power they enjoyed under Clinton.
See: Sustaining Nothing, Losing Everything, Sierra Times, June 20, 2002, by Tom DeWeese (posted June 21, 2002 by brityank).
"What is Sustainable Development? ... On June 29, 1993, former President Bill Clinton issued Executive Order #12852 to create the President's Council on Sustainable Development. Sustainable Development calls for changing the very infrastructure of the nation away from private ownership and control of property to nothing short of a national zoning system.
Locally elected officials will no longer be the single driving force in making decisions for their communities. Rules will be made behind the scenes in non-elected "sustainability councils" armed with truckloads of federal regulations, guidelines and money.
According to Sustainable Development policies, air conditioning, convenience foods, single-family housing and cars are among the products that have already been determined to be unsustainable. Under such a system, the federal government, backed by an army of private, non-governmental organizations.
(NGOs), like the Sierra Club, Planned Parenthood, and the National Education Association will influence, if not dictate, policy in state governments and in local communities...
...The Community Character Act (S.975), and its counterpart in the House of Representatives (H.R.1433), is the legislation that will legalize enforcement of Sustainable Development in every community in the nation. The bill requires local governments to implement land-management plans using guidelines outlined in a federal document called the "Smart Growth Legislative Guidebook." This publication was developed with $2 million provided by the Clinton Administration to "guide" counties, cities and towns on how to "update their local zoning."
The Community Character Act offers grants to communities that will pay up to 90% of the costs for localities to "update" their zoning, but only if they do it the way the federal government dictates. The Community Character Act requires localities to "conserve historic, scenic, natural and cultural resources." These are euphemisms that mean more land grabs and fewer places where people can freely go about their daily lives. It means planned economies, restricted housing, and diminished use of cars. It means government control of property. The bill contains not a single mention of private-property rights protection..."

The optimism expressed in the post was a reflection on the capacity of a mostly free nation being able to produce prosperity. As far as the AIDS thing goes I am not aware enough to give an informed opinion.

Freedomand not just economicwill expand under Bush.

I wish that were true. Most of America is still in bed, ST, and doesn't know who their mailman is, much less the Vice-President of the U.S. Nor do they care.
To: Sabertooth
anytime someone says that AIDS will be cured you know they're full of nonsense.
AIDS is a political disease. It is caused by specific acts of specific people. Our society has chosen to give those people a special status and our educational institutions have chosen to persuade young people that those acts are acceptable if not positive.
Until the "political correctness" game is over AIDS will be with us.
btw, check out
this web page and you will see that there is no "virus" to cure.

Ever hear of a cure for the common cold? We don't cure viruses.

Interesting speculation and much may well come true, but optimistic messages like this just inflame the anti-Bushies (sceptics too!).
Hey Laz, suffering from any inflammation lately? Cause now there's a perfect alibi...

You've got your A-game this morning, I see (no I didn't say "A+Bert", I said "A-game")
Anyway, I'm just happy to see Miss Cleo settling into her new job, under the pseudonym of E.G. Ross, mon.

"We are a house divided against itself....."
And we can blame that on the Diversity Squad and all the silly Americans who fall for their propaganda. This also includes tha Tolerance Squad who tell us we have to put up with anything and everything or else we're mean-spirited bigots.
