Gore Bashes Bush Policy As Cause of Biz Scandals

Beating what's likely to be the Democratic war drum in this year's elections, Al Gore blamed the nation's economic scandals — from Enron to WorldCom — last night on President Bush's economic policies.

"You see now what it means to have an administration that's that committed to fighting and working on behalf of the powerful, and letting the people of this country get the short end of the stick," Gore told more than 200 supporters at a Manhattan fund-raiser.

It was his strongest attack yet on Bush's economic policies and a preview of the likely Democratic strategy for November's elections.

"What we see now is a lack of confidence in our national economic policy, in the integrity of our accounting system, in the way government is being run," Gore told more than 200 supporters in Lot 61, a trendy Chelsea night spot.

The private companies, he said, "are not telling the truth about their future liabilities so they can shovel money out to executives at the top. That is exactly what the Bush-Cheney tax plan will do. They are misleading the country about the extent of the liabilities they are putting on us ... on you."

Gore also said the Securities and Exchange Commission isn't doing its job, and he called on its chairman, Harvey Pitt, to resign, suggesting Pitt is too cozy with captains of industry.

A NEW XEROX AUDIT FOUND that the company improperly accelerated far more revenue during the past five years than the SEC estimated in an April settlement. The total amount of improperly recorded revenue from 1997 through 2001 could be more than $6 billion.

It's $17,300,000,000 - the price of a few dozen urban renewal projects, a nice size fleet of warships or about half the tax cut that everyone made such a fuss about last summer. Disappeared. Gone. So the Democrats want everyone to believe that the tax cut caused the recession - which it didn't - and caused all kinds of calamity out there with social programs and Social Security and Medicare. But now we come to find out that the government can't account for $17.3 billion. It's such an insignificant amount of money compared to the whole U.S. budget of two trillion, but it's significant as far as the tax cut goes. In fact, it's half the amount of the tax cut!

Here's Washington, these holier-than-thou members of Congress, complaining about accounting practices in the private sector and how, "We have to do something!" And in certain circumstances they're right. But it's sort of like, "Hey, get your own house in order before you start telling other people how to do it right."

If they were investigating Enron, they'd be calling people up, demanding they testify about what happened to the people's money and whose back pocket it went into. They'd be looking for all kinds of corruption and crime. But when they, our great and loyal members of Congress, can't come up with $17.3 billion because it's just lost it? It reads, "The federal government wastes more than $19 billion annually in improper payments in a wide variety of programs." There was $1.8 billion in waste to the federal employees health benefits plan. Remember those 40 million uninsured Americans supposedly out there?

Why is Dick Gephardt always griping instead of going after this fraud? Now, I know I'm whistling Dixie here. People are not going to get outraged over this $19.1 billion in fraud in things like Medicare and Food Stamps. They're going to freak over WorldCom. But fraud is fraud, folks. WorldCom screwed a few of us, but if they should pay for that - and they should - then the government should pay for screwing all of us, shouldn't it?" Quote from Rush.
