Cronkite wants standing U.N. army: Former newsman continues activism for global government

In a new fund-raising letter for the World Federalist Association, former CBS anchorman Walter Cronkite, known for a generation as "the most trusted man in America," calls for the creation of a standing United Nations army and U.S. Senate ratification of the International Criminal Court.

The World Federalist Association, directed by former presidential candidate John Anderson, promotes the idea of global government as the solution for many of the world's problems.

"The recent terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon have shown that we must stand together, united as citizens of the world, if we are to create a world free of intolerance, injustice and violence," Cronkite says in his letter. "An empowered U.N. is our best hope for achieving such a goal – a global community that can solve our problems effectively, democratically and peacefully."

Specifically, Cronkite calls for:

Cronkite adds that "until we have effective international law to forge genuine, enforceable international solutions, many of the most vexing problems we face will continue to defy remedy."

The letter on behalf of the World Federalist Association's "Campaign for Global Change" is hardly the first time Cronkite has spoken out on such a controversial issue since stepping down as CBS News managing editor.

In October 1999, Cronkite spoke at the U.N. and called openly for world government – and an end to the notion of U.S. sovereignty.

"It seems to many of us that if we are to avoid the eventual catastrophic world conflict, we must strengthen the United Nations as a first step toward world government patterned after our own government with a legislature, executive and judiciary, and police to enforce its international laws and keep the peace," he said to those assembled including then-first lady Hillary Rodham Clinton. "To do that, of course, we Americans will have to yield up some of our sovereignty. That would be a bitter pill. It would take a lot of courage, a lot of faith in the new order."

Though Cronkite was known largely for his dispassionate coverage of the news during his tenure as CBS anchorman, he was recommended for the job by influential socialist journalist Blair Clark, late editor of the Nation magazine, according to Clark's obituary in that magazine in July 2000.

I think that the old boy is watching Star Trek again and he's got the sound way up. I bet he thinks that Jim Kirk will run the army for the World Hates America Global Government.

Cronkite wants standing U.N. army: Former newsman continues activism for global government

I remember when the old fart, back around 1976 during the bicentennial celebrations, opined that the U.S. Constitution was outmoded and should be replaced with something that was more consistent with our present, modern way of life. That was when I realized he had no clue at all about what makes the Constitution great and how it did, indeed, speak directly to the problems of modern governments: big, all-pervasive governements enslave the people. Of course, Cronkite could always have been in favor of big, all-pervasive governments that enslave people. He was probably of that crowd that thought the Soviet Union had the right idea but just had a few problems in getting it to work.

Is he still alive?

I guess our mistake in Viet Nam was not sending in a UN Peacekeeping force. It is not that he is against military force, he is only against United States Military.

I never figured out who gave Walter Cronkite the title of "the most trusted man in America", other than Democratic politicians (Walter was a slavering Clinton supporter and Slickness frequently went out on his boat), his fellow "news" people, or his wife.

Walter is a perfect example of the elitist "I've got mine," attitude.

"full and on-time payments of all U.S. financial obligations to the U.N. – which amounts to only $1.11 per U.S. citizen"

I want a refund.

"a more democratic and representative U.N. that provides a voice for the world's citizens, not just governments."

How can there be a democratic UN unless the governments themselves are democratic? That is one of the big problems with the UN. Thugs, dictators and terrorists are treater with the same respect as democratically elected governments.

The most respected man in television devolved into a senile idiot.
Not the first time.

Walter Cronkite, once highly respected, now mostly despised. His true colors came into full view after retirement, the mark of a man more committed then to his image than his beliefs, afterwards using his status "earned" to browbeat the rest of the world with his dogma. Journalism schools teach his career as a model to emulate. Cowardice and self servitude, pure and simple.

While waiting to board my flight from Tokyo to NY at the end of of March , I saw Mr. Crankcase . He was wheeled into the boarding area in a wheelchair by an airport attendant , and accompanied by a small entourage . He sat across from me , feeble , encrusted ...staring widely at various folks , including myself . I locked eyes with him for a few seconds , and thought about those innocent days back in the early 60's when I used to get up earlier than usual before school to watch the NASA space launches , which Walter always attended and commentated on . In my naivete , he seemed like such a nice , harmless guy . Like many others I was happily unaware of his socialist leanings ...

Anyway , that March afternoon at Narita , despite our political differences , I was tempted to walk over and introduce myself , and thank him for the memories . After reading this thread , I am so damn glad I decided otherwise ...

Cronkite is a Don of Liberalism. There are a number of Dons but Cronkite is a major one. Lest we forget he took old Billy boy Clinton out for a boat ride re impeachment.
Walter also sidelines with a powerful production company
which airs cable shows.
