Go-getter grandma uplifted by makeover

At 82, Phyllis Porter of Lynnfield is one smokin' babe. And she should be. Porter had a face lift, breast implants, Botox injections, lip resculpting and a chemical peel - 7 1/2 hours and about $25,000 worth of surgery - to find the fountain of youth.
<!ENDSUMM!>

``I think I look good,'' Porter told the Track. ``My husband likes the way I look and I don't care what other people think.''

Boston plastic surgeon Sheldon Sevinor did Porter's marathon makeover two years ago at the Mass. Eye & Ear Infirmary. They don't keep records but the Lynnfield grandmother may be the oldest patient to ever undergo such dramatic cosmetic surgery.

``What difference does it make if you're 2 or 82, if you want to do it you want to do it,'' Porter said. ``There was no point in waiting until I got any older - and I'm not getting any younger!''

Sevinor said he and Porter are scheduled to be on ``Good Morning America'' Monday to show off her new look to Diane Sawyer for a piece on ``Down-aging.''

Sevinor said he agreed to do the surgery on Porter because she's in excellent health and was able to tolerate the grueling day-long procedure.

``She's got great genes,'' he said. ``Her mom lived to be 105. And Phyllis has a great attitude. I don't see any objection to doing this at any age as long as health permits it.''

But Sevinor said Porter isn't some kind of nip-and-tuck phenomenon. The plastic surgeon says he's seeing lots more older patients in his practice.

``The recent trend in cosmetic surgery is patients in their 70s and 80s,'' he said. ``People are healthier and living longer than ever and society is reinterpreting the hallmarks of aging. Today 50 is more like 40 and 40 is more like 30.''

Sevinor said Porter, a retired nurse anesthetist, ``does more in a day than most 30 year olds.''

``She has a swimmer's body,'' he said. ``Very fit.''

The other day Porter waltzed into Sevinor's office in beige capris, a tank top and a big floppy hat - looking more like 52 than 82.

``The man across the street said `You look like a movie star,' '' Porter said, ``But I think he's prejudiced.''

Porter said recuperating from the surgery took a while but she knew that it would. She had had a facelift once before at age 56.

This time, in addition to the facelift, Sevinor did breast implants because Phyllis told him she was tired of looking at ``those two flat pancakes.'' She also had a chemical peel to erase wrinkles, collagen injections in her lips, Botox between her eyebrows and he repositioned facial fat to give her cheekbones.

``I had everything I could afford,'' she said.

Sevinor noted that the Botox and collagen have to be reinjected regularly because, after time, they wear out. But all in all he's quite pleased with the end result.

``The chemical peel is a big part of how I smoothed her face out,'' he said. ``A facelift won't take care of sun damage and age spots - and she had a lot of age spots.''

Which leads to the inevitable question: At 80, why bother?

``I never thought about how old I was,'' Porter said, ``I just wanted to look better.''

Amen, sister.
