As I see it, the bad guys see these type of targets as both physical and psychological. Basically, if they are successful (esp. in a plane), there will be a large number of victims. Also, since a much larger proportion of the population has some type of 'fear' of flying, they can incite this rather easily.

I am one of those who has always had a fear of flying, and these incidents just make me even more afraid! In fact, I am reluctant to fly anywhere. I just want to stay put.
