I agree with Steyn that the Europeans (and many American liberals) have given up believing in God. Instead they believe in an unattainable utopia where animals and plants co-exist with non-violent humans of every hue. They worship the idea of nature or the idea of equality but they live in their heads. They want to do things like send money to Africa to end poverty but they hate finding out that the African leaders are stealing the money and that the Africans are still poor. They don't want to know this. They want to feel good about themselves. They enjoy feeling self-righteous--it's the closest they can get to spiritual. They are brainwashed children still rebelling against mommy and daddy.
IMHO they like people like Clinton because he lies to them. He tells them what they want to hear. He's their sugar daddy. He's also infantile in his personal life so he offers no rebuke to their own selfish preoccupations. They hate GW because he's an adult male who dislikes small talk and demands accountability and results. He goes to Church and he sleeps with his own wife. He is an affront to their vanity because he calls them on their bulls---!
