Folks, you must read Rich Galen's Mullings column from Monday. He makes great points on Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle's comment about SEC Chairman Harvey Pitt on Face the Nation. Daschle said that Pitt should be replaced because of his relationship with business. John McCain parroted his leader, Daschle, by calling for Pitt's head in Monday's New York Times.
But the facts disagree with Daschle and McCain. Chairman Pitt's bio, which I read on Monday's show, shows he has far, far cleaner credentials than most Clintonistas - as we cover in Stop the Tape! Puff & Pitt.
Galen nails Daschle on why Pitt should step down by taking his thinking to the logical conclusion: the removal of Senator Jon Corzine, former co-chairman of Goldman Sachs; Senator Maria Cantwell, who made millions in the pre-burst DotCom market, and Bob Rubin, Clinton SecTres and director of Enron client Citigroup. And what about Mrs. Senator Tom Daschle and Mrs. Senator Jeff Bingaman?

Daschle and Bingaman are two of the most highly paid lobbyists in the United States. Ann Bingaman was the lead lawyer in the anti-trust division of Clinton's Department of Justice before becoming Global Crossing's main Washington lobbyist! Global Crossing, though no one in the press mentions it, was every bit as corrupt as Enron. DNC Chief Terry McAuliffe made $18 million off a $100,000 investment, and when the company went bust, the "little people" were screwed.
I think this is a great point: Corzine of Goldman Sachs and Bob Rubin, who was also at Goldman Sachs, also say they didn't know what was going on the last 18 months, yet no one asks, "Why didn't they call anybody to warn them? They were on Wall Street where all this was happening!" We accept that they didn't know, but who's to say they didn't? They say Bush knew with no evidence. We have laws; let's investigate these people!

The senatorial wife who hit it big was Anne Bingaman, married to New Mexico's Jeff Bingaman, chairman of the Energy and Natural Resources Committee. As lobbyist for the telecommunications comet Global Crossing, which went bankrupt last month, she received $2,500,000 for six months' work during 1999.
And one of those articles that makes you go hmmmmmmm.....
A front page article in the Saturday Santa Fe New Mexican reported the wife of Senator Jeff Bingaman (D-NM) received $2.5 million in fees as a lobbyist on behalf of the fiber-optic company, Global Crossing. The paper reported that Anne Bingaman's office released a statement in which she stated she, "never met or spoke at any member of Congress or congressional staff on behalf of Global Crossing."

Point 8: Democratic Senate Energy Committee Chairman Jeff Bingaman personally met with Enron Corp. Chairman Ken Lay in June 2001 to discuss energy policy. The June 21 meeting was a few weeks after Bingaman, a top Senate recipient of Enron's political contributions and a former Enron stockholder, had become chairman of the energy committee following the Democrats' taking control of the Senate. The two men discussed proposals to restructure energy markets that were going to be coming before Bingaman's committee, but he said nothing Enron has done has influenced his work in the Senate (right!!!). By the time Lay and Bingaman met, Enron's stock had already begun its precipitous slump that ended in the largest bankruptcy filing in history on Dec. 2 and has sparked numerous investigations by congressional committees and a Justice Department probe. Bingaman's Energy Committee is planning a hearing at the end of the month to investigate whether additional oversight and regulation of the electrical markets is needed. A week before the June meeting Bingaman's financial manager sold 200 shares of Enron stock from one of the senator's investment funds. The stock had been bought in October 2000 for $16,525 and sold June 15 for $9,596.

Bingaman became a member of the New Mexico Bar in August 1969 after graduating from Stanford Law School in 1968. She worked for the New Mexico Bureau of Revenue, the New Mexico Attorney General's office, and the Modrall Law Firm before becoming an assistant professor of law at the University of New Mexico in January 1972. Bingaman taught at University of New Mexico for four years, received tenure, and participated with numerous other women lawyers in passing the New Mexico Equal Rights Amendment and ratifying the federal Equal Rights Amendment. Bingaman served as chair of a bar committee appointed by the New Mexico Legislature to revise the state's community property and other laws to conform to the State Equal Rights Amendment. In 1975, Bingaman served as a consultant to the Federal Reserve Board in writing regulations to accompany the Federal Equal Credit Opportunity Act. In 1977, Bingaman founded her own law firm, which remained in Santa Fe until 1984 when it was closed after Bingaman moved to Washington with her husband, Sen. Jeff Bingaman. The firm's specialty was antitrust litigation in the uranium cartel cases and the natural gas cases. In Washington, Bingaman remained in antitrust litigation until 1993, when she was appointed by President Clinton to head the Antitrust Division of the Department of Justice under Attorney General Janet Reno. Anne held that position from June 1993 until October 18, 1996. In that time, she filed the first Microsoft case, prosecuted the Archer Daniel Midlands criminal case and obtained a settlement with 24 market makers in Nasdaq, which helped reduce the spreads on Nasdaq to one tenth of their previous levels. She was also active in efforts to pass the 1996 Telecom Act. In 1997, Bingaman became senior vice president and founding president of the Local Service Division at LCI International, the nation's sixth largest long distance company. When LCI was bought by Qwest in June 1998, Bingaman began work with two partners to found what has become Valor Telecom, in combination with a group of leading Hispanic investors, many of whom are longtime residents of New Mexico. Bingaman is now chair and CEO of Valor Telecom, which is the 14th largest local exchange company in the country, serving over 550,000 customers in New Mexico, Texas and Oklahoma.
