Shanley has accused Cushing of abusing him when he was a seminarian at Boston's St. John Seminary. As I recall, in the letter the Boston Globe posted on its website, Shanley used the rather curious circumlocution about being abused "by a predecessor to one of the Cardinals now persecuting me." The current Cardinals referred to were O'Connor and Law.
