Bump. There have not been, IMHO, many athletes worthy of the spurious title of "role model" but Ted Williams was certainly one. He quit playing before I was born, but like all born Red Sox fans, I grew up idolizing the mythical "Splendid Splinter" and, among my most cherished possessions, is a ball he signed in his last season, bequeathed to me by my uncle, who like all men in my family, taught me that Ted truly was larger than life. He was a great baseball player, but knew that there were more important things than baseball, and answered his country's call, volunteering for the hazardous role of Marine aviator. He was truly a great athlete and a great American.
