German Intelligence: Bin Laden Alive
ASSOCIATED PRESS

BERLIN- The head of Germany's foreign intelligence agency said in an interview published Saturday that he believes Osama bin Laden is still alive and hiding along the border between Afghanistan and Pakistan.

August Hanning, the head of the Federal Intelligence Service, also estimated that more than 5,000 supporters of al-Qaida and Afghanistan's ousted Taliban militia remain in Afghanistan and neighboring Pakistan, while many others have returned to their homelands.

"They are preparing attacks from their new locations - they will try everything to strike again," he was quoted as saying in the Welt am Sonntag newspaper. "We must be prepared for that."

He referred to no specific plans.

Bin Laden and his al-Qaida terrorist network are held responsible for the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks on the United States. Shortly after the attacks, Bush said he wanted bin Laden "dead or alive."

Since then, Bush and other U.S. officials have played down the search for bin Laden, saying the more important goal is disrupting al-Qaida and preventing future attacks.

"As our knowledge stands, we are convinced that bin Laden is still alive, in the border region of Afghanistan and Pakistan," Hanning was quoted as saying.

"He is still the symbolic figurehead of al-Qaida, but apparently moves around little and when he does, in a very secretive manner," Hanning added, without elaborating.

Last Monday, President Bush said he does not know whether bin Laden is dead or alive.

German security agencies have worked closely with their counterparts in the United States to investigate the Sept. 11 attacks after it emerged that three of the suicide hijackers had lived undetected in Hamburg.

Hanning said bin Laden was consulted in planning for major al-Qaida attacks "but he did not operationally prepare the actions, and probably didn't even know all the details of the preparations."

He added the preparations for Sept. 11 "didn't cost much more than $1 million."

Remember "El Cid"? They stuck the dead body on a horse and he scared the enemy...

<LOL> While Mr. Tator frequently misspells, I've never found his content unreadable even when I was unhappy with his ideas.

But in this particular instance, I don't believe this was any careless misspelling.

Here are two clues for ya.
From content, one can be sure of Mr. Tator's opinion of Deutschlanders.
Then, when one then sounds out the "specially" coined "Duetchlander" and "Duetch", one gets a redoubling of that opinion.

And then I have to aplaud him here for his restraint -- on not appending another graphic term to the last of these. A gentleman.

In the however unlikely chance that this was not intentional, I will grant you this. If the misspelling wasn't deliberate, then his choice of misspelling was nothing short of serendipitously brilliantly Freudian. Thus, in either case, this was no careless misspelling. <G>

Ha, signal jammer was only my second "hat." My real job was Czech/Slovak translator/interpreter, or 98 Golf as they called it. What's a K-3 suffix mean?

K3 was the suffix given to CMF 98 who had attended and passed the Jammer Operator course. When I took it, the course was at Ft. Devens. Equipment learned in my time there was the GLQ-3B & TLQ-17A.

If you look at post 65, it appears I had replied to him via pm. I don’t recall doing so. I just found the related post during a google search unrelated to FR, but google still had it. heck it was only a little over a decade.

What is really sad is that seeing the headline, it could have been a very real and up-to-date article with our current president.

HA HA!! The internet truly never forgets. We must have set some sort of FR record for delayed replies.

And I couldn’t resist looking through my old FReepmail. You did indeed reply! It’s funny that I came to the site today— I don’t visit more than once or twice a week nowadays....so much water under the bridge since 2002....12+ years....goodness sakes, I feel old!

Thanks for your rather extraordinary reply. All the best!
