He played a major role in the operation which resulted in the capture of the terrorists and murderers who hijacked the cruise ship Achille Lauro.

This is one of the problems that occurs when a person like North writes his own biography. North played a part but he wasn't the central player. Suggest you pick up the book "The Nightingale's Song" for a different perspective on Oliver. As Chuch Krulak is quoted as saying "'As for his exaggerations, said Krulak, "Most of his close friends crank in about a 10 percent bulls*** factor." The sad part, he said, was that North had no need to overstate his accomplishments. "It just was not necessary," he said. "He was good enough without all that."'"

There are two camps concerning North, for the most part, people either love him or hate him. There's really not a lot of middle ground. He deserves credit for what he did as an infantry officer and the good things he accomplished but he also deserves scorn for a lot of things he did after leaving Vietnam and while at the NSC and all the revisionism he engages in. He's a charismatic guy and if you had a hill that needed to be taken he'd be on the short list to lead the charge but he's also a major BS artist.

I enjoy your posts.

Some folks sure can get their panties in a bunch easily. I have observed that those who commonly resort to invective are frequently the less able, defensive minds. The high net worth, high end CEO at the top of the game is often quiet, succinct and understated in his/her approach. We Freepers can and should disagree, but with class, please. We can fuss after Barney Frank, Bubba Rex, Tom Daschle, Hillary Regina, James Carville, Terry McAuliffe et freakin' alii are consigned to the scrap heap of history. (I would probably include Trent Lott in that list).

That said, in contrast to 99.9723% of the politicians in DC, Ollie is a great American. (With the clay feet we all have).

Blessings on Freepers Everywhere.

Good post. I agree. The argument started when spete piped up with his "North's not a soldier" rant.

sneakyp may have been a career NCO, but in that career he didn't learn one thing about respect for his bretheren or for the Commander in Chief.

His every-day posts are from an ultra-right-wing position, which isn't necessarily bad, but to the exclusion of the right wing.

He bashes President Bush and anything he does. Even Bill Gates would have trouble producing software if the majority of his underlings were anti-capitalist.

The object is to replace democrats with Republicans. Period. I'll take the worst Republican over ANY democrat. It's about Commitee heads. It's about judges.

sneakyp thinks, by complaining often enough, he would wind up with some ultra-rt-wng admin.

At some point reality has to enter the picture. Having a wish list is a good thing. I want a new Lincoln, but sometimes you just have to settle for what's practical. But, no way would I buy a foreign car as part of my settlement.

Voting for anyone but Bush ,if he runs, is a vote for the democrats. Until some here see that, we're destined to bad government and have to resort to complaining about it here.

I've always said...."the difference between a democrat and a Republican is the direction of th check" and that may be sneakypete's problem. For his career, and I'm sure still, his checks have USA under 'issued by'.

Glad you enjoy my posts. Tongue in cheek describes most of them.

"Shouldn't he have friends that would know a lot?"

One would think so, but he doesn't anymore. His inner circle is now the outer circle. I was told a story about Ollies trip to Afghanistan by an insider, where Ollie and his film crew were ordered off a military transport by Admiral Quigley and the Pentagon. Ollie just doesn't have the pull he once had.

"I don't believe it for a minute."

All I am doing is telling you what someone at MSNBC and Fox told me last month, you can always e-mail Ollie or his producer. BTW, Ollie was doing this for Fox News Channel at the time. Matter of fact due to this Ollie was recalled from Afghanistan because he could not get reports on the air. This does not mean I do not like Ollie.

Many times it seems the true hero catches the blame for others' irresponsible actions rather than getting the credit they deserve. Our Vietnam veterans are a prime example. There were no ticker tape parades when they returned.

Recently we were shown another example of this paradox. A patriotic lt. colonel and decorated veteran of Vietnam was sent through the congressional ringer for the insidious crime of aiding and abetting our friends, the freedom fighters in Nicaragua. From watching the hearings on TV you would think the inquisition committee was selected by the KGB.

Though none of us know all the details about Colonel Oliver North, it would be safe to assume that anyone with seven rows of medals on his chest, including a Purple Heart, a Gold star, and two crosses of Gallantry, can't be all bad.

'...the direction of the check...' Nice turn of phrase.

Woops! I'll have to change to Democrat: My checks are all outgoing. And going. And going, going, gone...

'It's about Committee heads, it's about judges.'

Amen. If only those disaffected with Republicans (and in any other environment I would have some profoundly dire things to say about the homo politicus republicanus typified by Trent Lott) really understood the nature of the fight we're in and the true character of the Left, they would flock to Bush. This is reality. The hand we are dealt.

I have lived and worked in Russia and Eastern Europe. I know Communists. The pubbies are problematical, but Communists they are not. And there ain't a zloty's worth of difference between a dyed-in-the-wool Communist and Bubba Rex, Daschle, Carville & the whole vile lot. (Now what was I saying about those who resort to invective....?)

Blessings on Freepers Everywhere.

If it were only that easy. I have to re-buy my home every 20 years. meaning.....the taxes on my home for 20 years, if the rates don't go up, are as much as I paid for the home.
