While citizens and nationals of the U.S. are automatically eligible for employment, they too must present proof of employment eligibility and identity and complete an Employment Eligibility Verification form (Form I-9).

I used to process new employees in a police department. I completed the I-9 and had to have driver's license and original Social Security card which I copied and sent to government. It may have required more, I can't remember. I wasn't required to verify, just supply the information.

On this I-9 form that I'm reading,

it says that the employee is voluntarily giving this information

but yet they mandate it by the employer!!.
