Farmers in the North West are joining their Free State counterparts in offering to help Zimbabwean farmers who want to move after losing their farms at the hands of Zimbabwe's controversial land reform programme. Wilco Beukes, the Agri North West spokesperson, says that about 100 Zimbabwean farmers have already approached his organisation for farming assistance in the province.
Beukes says members of Agri North West are keen to assist their Zimbabwean counterparts.
Meanwhile, the UN says the forcible occupation of white-owned farms in Zimbabwe has contributed to the deepest economic crisis in the country's history. The UN's Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) says in its annual overview President Robert Mugabe's government is inconsistent and that land redistribution should go hand in hand with good governance to protect output and jobs.
The ECA report projects negative growth of 5% for Zimbabwe this year, and notes that 75% of its people now live in poverty. - Additional reporting by Sapa
