DUBLIN, Ireland -- The Irish Republican Army has issued an unprecedented statement apologising for the killing of all "non-combatants" during its 30-year campaign.

The republican paramilitary group offered its "sincere apologies and condolences" to the families of victims, while also acknowledging the grief and pain of the families of the combatants -- police, soldiers and loyalist paramilitaries -- killed during the violence.

I wonder if they are feeling a little heat, considering that they are a terrorist organization...

Your attitude is cynical and repugnant. The IRA took a major step in admitting blame and ushering in peace between the two factions in Ireland.

Did you also complain when the Berlin wall came down? Would you complain if al Queda conceded defeat and admitted its guilt?

Do you know anything more about this conflict than what you just read on cnn.com?

Never ceases to amaze me of the number of ignoramues on this website that "think" they know what's going on in Ireland. Did the IRA ask for your forgiveness? Noooooo. Did the IRA ask for anyone's forgiveness? Nooooo. Being that you are a supposed "senior citizen" living in New Jersey, I would suggest you keep your "thoughts" to yourself and let people think you a fool than advertise them and remove all doubt. We Irish don't really care whether you forgive and forget. We Irish haven't forgotten the 700 years of Brit genocide and occupation. And we certainly aren't holding our breath waiting for an apology from the queen for all their atrocities. Since you obviously have access to a computer you might want to educate yourself on Irish history before you break wind...

Guess you choose to ignore the fact that the IRA is working with drug running terrorists in Colombia.......that IRA terrorists are helping the terrorists in the Philippines.......that IRA terrorists are helping the Palestinian Hamas terrorists.....you just hang on to your centuries old vendettas if it makes you feel better.

Really? I'll be waiting to see all your links to back this up. Nevertheless, I don't support the IRA or any other group that engages in terrorism, but I think when such a group makes an unprecedented and unheard of concession toward peace, we shouldn't be so cynical. We should respond in kind, albeit cautiously, and work to rebuild good relations.

It's attitudes like yours that perpetuate the tensions.

Why does Free Republic have to have ignorant retards like you?

I express cautious optimism about an unprecedented concession that may lead to peace in a land troubled by senseless violence for 30 years and that makes me a terrorist, huh?

Have you had a lobotomy?
