To call them "suicide bombers" puts the emphasis on their own death and "sacrifice" and "martyrdom" and ignores their real goal. These murderers are trying to kill as many people as possible, not just commit suicide. President Bush and Secretary of State Powell call them "homicide bombers," a much more accurate term that clearly states what this act really is, a crime. Unfortunately, the use of the term "suicide bomber" is not limited to the St. Petersburg Times, but is a common term used by most of the media (the one exception is Fox News, which has always called them "homicide bombers." |

No truly fair-minded person would label a homicidal maniac targeting babies and families going about their day-to-day affairs as "militants".

This was not an ambush. It was the the indiscriminate killing of human beings. The pregnant mother and nine month old infant were not the enemy. MASSACRE would have been a much better word |
|
Furthermore, The St. Petersburg Times reports this story on the last page of Section A, while an Israeli rocket attack on the home and bomb laboratory of a Hamas terrorist -- that kills nobody and injures 5-- is a page 2 story, occupying virtually the entire page ! |
Now, compare the same story as reported by FOX News...... |
Fox News labels the attack on innocent civilians for what it is.. cold-blooded murder! |
|
Fox News calls these murders terrorists. Why can't the St. Petersburg Times do the same? |
Why is it that Palestinian deaths and funerals are covered extensively by the St. Petersburg Times, but intentional Israeli civilian deaths are passed over without a mention. Fox News is at least fair and reports these tragic deaths. |

Last time we checked, the State Dept. had designated Hamas as a terrorist organization. Who is the St. Pete Times (and the NY Times for that matter) trying to protect?? They are not 'militants,' 'activists,' or even 'freedom fighters.' We nmedia needs to identify them for what they are: criminal terrorists. |
Palestinian leader to face Israeli court
A top Fatah official will be tried in a civilian court in connection with a string of fatal attacks.

A top Fatah official will be tried in a civilian court in connection with a string of fatal attacks on Israelis. JERUSALEM -- The Israeli Justice Ministry announced Thursday that Marwan Barghouti, a top Palestinian leader jailed three months ago, will be tried in a civilian court in connection with attacks that killed dozens of Israeli civilians and injured hundreds more. |
"Attacks on Israelis." False! Bad journalism! Barghouti is accused of murder--killing civilians! An "attack on an Israeli" could be lobbing a shell at an Israeli tank in combat. He is not accused of that. He is accused of slaughtering women and children. |
|
Barghouti, 42, who headed Yasser Arafat's Fatah organization in the West Bank, will be the first ranking Palestinian leader tried by Israel in years. The plan to charge such a political figure in court was seen as another sign of how much the situation has deteriorated since the hopeful days of the 1993 Oslo peace agreement between Israel and the Palestinians, and Arafat's triumphant return from exile the following year. Barghouti has been described by Israeli officials as a leading Palestinian terrorist; a spokesman for the attorney general said he likely will be indicted on charges of terrorism and murder in several weeks and be taken before a court shortly thereafter. But among Palestinians, Barghouti is admired as an instigator of and driving force in the uprising against continued Israeli occupation in the West Bank and Gaza Strip that began in September 2000. |
|
He became embittered over the failed dream by settlements and the roadblocks and curfews.Four other Palestinian militants who have been or will be charged with a variety of terrorist attacks -- including the March 27 Passover bombing at the Park Hotel in Netanya that killed 30 people -- will also be tried in civilian courts soon, according to the attorney general's office. "It is quite unusual that we put people who were arrested in the territories on trial in a civilian court in Israel, but in this case their seniority and involvement in terrorist acts made us decide to bring them to justice in civilian court and not in a military court," said Jacob Galanti, a Justice Ministry spokesman. While there is no difference in the authority of civilian and military courts, he said, "there is some (advantage) to a civilian court, where the public can see the charges and the media can cover the trial easily and with no problems." He said Barghouti would be tried by a panel of three civilian judges in district court, probably in Tel Aviv or Jerusalem................. |
Note the prejudiced and false description of Barghouti. Failed dream? By that do they mean the Barak near-surrender at Camp David? Nowhere quoted is the ample evidence indicating that Barghouti, like so many of the Palestinian leaders, turned to murder to achieve what could not be achieved at the bargaining table. |

In other developments: Amnesty International condemned Palestinian suicide bombings against Israelis, calling them crimes against humanity and declaring no Israeli military action justified the killing of civilians. Israeli officials welcomed the report; Palestinian officials dismissed it as unbalanced. The report said about 350 Israeli civilians have been killed in 130 attacks by Palestinian militias since fighting broke out anew in September 2000. According to figures compiled by the Associated Press, 1,752 people have been killed on the Palestinian side and 565 on the Israeli side. The totals include 71 Palestinian suicide bombings that have killed 251 Israelis. |
Then the Times relegates a couple of paragraphs at the end of the article to a very significant Amnesty International report. If this was a report against Israel, it would have warranted a full article. Instead it gets short shrift at the bottom of the article on the back page. Then, the paperomits a crucial fact--that the report said the Palestinians may be guilty of "war crimes. |

With a Misleading Headline.........
"Palestinian gu nmen kill 4 Israeli civilians"
perhaps terrorist or murderer would be a better word |
|
|
Yes, they were civilians, but they were really teenagers. The death of a Palestinian child is always noted by the Times |
