It kinda reminds me of that enviro-chick that was gored while protesting the running of the bulls in Spain.

About a year ago some young Peace Corps girl was trampled to death trying to take a closeup of a bull elephant in Kenya. Park officials said the sound of the camera probably set it off, though bull elephants are known to attack for no reason. What don't these morons understand about the phrase "wild animals"? Too many Disney cartoons if you ask me.

The ignorance of tourists cannot be overestimated. I once watched a woman feeding a good sized black bear bologna by hand down in the Smokies. She got away with it.

If someone put his hand on my chin to lift my head while I was eating my dinner I'd do the same.

O.K. Hold my beer, now I'll stick my head in the croc's mouth and you snap the shot. It'll look cool!

I went on a game drive in a reserve owned by one of the Getty Brothers in South Africa. Pretty posh place. I couldn't afford to stay there- just had dinner and two game drives. It's done in an open Land Rover, like a Land Rover convertible. Your Ranger drives and your tracker sits on this special seat bolted to the front of the grill so he can "read the animal sign" apparantly. At any rate they found a small pride of lions and we drove right into their midst. We were literally 6 or 7 feet away from the nearest one and in a totally open vehicle. They had just feasted on an antelope of some sort and were dozing while the flies worried at their blood stained mouths. They had full bellies and weren't interested in us. They barely stirred when we drove up- it must be nice to be at the top of the food chain.

Anyway, the guide/ranger told the story of one group of tourists- Japanese. The rangers had told them how to conduct themselves on the game drives- never stand up in the open vehicle and never get out. Well, they had found a similar lion pride, lazing around in the sun. They had parked and were getting a good look. Suddenly one of the Japanese decided he needed to get a picture of himself with the pride. He gave his camera to his wife, jumped out and walked right over to the lions turned around and posed. Well, the lions killed him. The rangers tried to drive the vehicle over his body to protect him, but the lions just reached under and snagged him. They had sushi for lunch.

There was a family of black bears (Mom and her two kids) raiding some trash cans at a scenic overlook in the Smokies. People were standing around taking pictures. I watches as one brilliant man walked in between mom and her cubs so he could get a shot of the cubs. He got away minus his pants and a fair bit of his backside.

Right. Sorta like it's not okay for me to kill a deer with a clean shot to the neck but it's okay for hundreds of them to starve and die slowly. Which does happen occasionally around here.

The ignorance of tourists cannot be overestimated.

Many years ago I saw a TV Special about the national parks. One distraught ranger quit his job after witnessing some moron parents who had their young child walk up to a brown bear and give it a marshmallow so they could get a picture!!!!

If someone goes to see wild animals, they need to understand that they are Wild ANIMALS. Killing them for following their nature seem seriously unfair to me. The animals exist by their instinct--humans supposedly have superior intelligence--duh!

My favorite story comes from Col. Jeff Cooper.
A photographer wanted to take some movie footage of a lion pride. Later they only found his movie camera, tripod and a shoe. When the authorities developed the film, the pride was visible and then the photographer. The guy waved toward the camera, walked to the closest lion and swatted it's behind.
Cooper always wondered what would have happened if they would have just sent the undeveloped film to the bereaved.

.." No action will be taken against the bull bison, the park said in a statement..."

Good thing it wasn't from somewhere on the east or left coast, that bison would be up on charges of self-defense.
