Hitler was born in Austria, but lost his Austrian citizenship. He also was not German, and could not run for a political position legally in Germany. His German citizenship was a farce.
The whole thing was a farce really. And that is what made it so very evil. A whole country was willing to believe, promote, kill and die for a lie. And it wasn't even a well-crafted lie.
If it hadn’t happened no one would believe it. It is too far fetched.
