July 28, 2002 -- WASHINGTON - Plans for a strike on Saddam Hussein and Iraq appear to be intensifying, with three indicators last week suggesting an attack could be sooner than most long-range predictions.

The preparations have temporarily been code-named Operation Polo Step, Pentagon sources told The Post.

The president believes Sept. 11 has given him a mandate and that the war on terrorism cannot be considered completed as long as Saddam Hussein remains in power.

Would be fitting.

I really dont see Saddam just sitting back and letting us come after him, I see him going down in flames and taking as many Americans and Jews with him as possible.

I also dont see many Iraqi generals turning against their leader as well, either way they are dead men and the probably know it

Or they could turn on the guy responsible for their dilemma and save themselves a lot of grief. I think that's the optimistic scenario. If, besides the dire threats to those who might use chem/bio against us, we also make it clear that once Saddam is gone we will allow Iraq to remain a sovereign, independent state, so long as they don't act as incubator for world terrorism, they might rise up and do the job for us.

Iraq is no Afghanistan. It shouldn't require nation-building or a long-term US presence. All they need do is get rid of Saddam, treat the Kurds and other minorities with a modicum of respect, and give up the preoccupation with WMD. Do the generals really care to join 'Fearless Leader' in a blaze of glory?

Concur. Even the simple replacement of Hussein a pragmatic military strongman, one with no delusions of being the new Saladin, or the reincarnation of Nebuchadnezar, would be perfectly a satisfactory outcome. But some way, some how, Saddam Hussein must be eliminated.

Take a (winning) play from the democrats handbook and do it before November.

Sure they will whine, but.. frankly this has been on the horizon for so long now there's not much they can say about it.

I mean, everyone knew that it was going to come down to this.. So when they scream "October surprise!" no one will be listening.

Getting rid of the problem in Iraq is not as easy as killing the madman. I believe it is his baath party that is and has been in power for the years of his rule. This is an entrenched minority that realizes that as soon as Heussain is eliminated their security is shakey at best. The party made up mostly from people in his home town area have been more then brutal to Iraqs populace. If Sadman falls anyone associated with the party most likely will also be eliminated by those who have had loved ones killed. They rule by the same method as Castro, by the gun. The only ones with guns are the government. Give the govt. any crap and get shot as a warning to others.

You have to know that after the first shot is fired that sadman will unleash any fury he can against Israel. Lots of scuds with chemical and biological weapons. This time no one should believe that Israel would sit back and take it like last time. Any general in Iraq that has seen what can happen to their armies and people if they try to go toe to toe with the big dog. GO American troops, the best in the world, May each and every one of you come home to your families safe and sound, and GOD Bless.

Re #1

When the attack starts, we could see thousands of Toyota light pickup trucks zipping around in the Iraqi desert, probably manned by Kurds and INC members. They should do a lot of hit-and-run attacks. Creating a lot of chaos behind the front with fast and highly mobile trucks with great "fuel efficiecy", meaning far less concern for refueling problems. As in Afghan, we need to let Iraqi chase us rather than us chasing them, at least during the opening phase. It will help Iraqi regulars deserting their posts and getting lost or defecting to American side, because it will break down control and surveillance by Mukhubarat.

That's so 1991. Weren't you watching TV last September 11? Saddam will take the war home to the United States. He don't need no stinking ICBMs. BTW, that's what this letter means:

Just ask Klintoon what he would do.
Then do the complete opposite.

You are correct in that America will be hit but Israel may be eliminated.

"Or they could turn on the guy responsible for their dilemma and save themselves a lot of grief."

I wonder if that's why we're telegraphing our intentions so publicly? It would be a preferred end, IMO.

Operation Polo Step? Does this mean that U.S. troops will attack on horseback? Or will the foot soldiers go in outfitted with Ralph Loren supplied uniforms bearing the Polo logo? Where will the Democrats stand on Operation Polo Step? It sounds like too much of an upper class event to garner their support!
