. "I know you'd like to be respected as a national leader, rather than be generally known as a sneaky little weasel who can't be trusted for an instant."
ROFL
"What better place to stick a special interest legal provision than in the bill to pay for America's defense?"
This practice has bothered me for a long time. Isn't there a way we can get this outlawed? It really should be illegal.

Excellent.
Guaranteed, even if Li'l Tommy the scumbag didn't have the guts to read your (open) letter, somebody on his staff did. And at least
some "reporters" and "journalists" did. And a bunch of South Dakota voters did. And a lot of freepers did, too.
And now it is out there on the world-wide web, forever.
Excellent, excellent work.
That scumbag Daschle can run but he can't hide.

Thanks for your comments.
I hope that a South Dakota FReeper or two has circulated this in that state. There's a lot of stuff on the Internet that might be of value in this state or that. But until it comes to the attention of folks there, it is wasted words.

Preventing "garbage-can" legislation, in which Congress throws in everything on every subject that they can get away with, can be stopped. But it requires a constitutional amendment.
Some states have "single subject" provisions in their Constitutions. This prevents "garbage-can" legislation. But there is no such provision in the US Constitution.
The other cure is the "line-item" veto. Some Governors have this power from their Constitutions. Congress attempted to create this at the federal level by a law, some years ago. The Supreme Court correctly ruled that this cannot be done by a law, but only by a constitutional amendment. If the President had such a power, he could pick the garbage out of the larger law.
Either solution would work. Both would be preferable. Neither can exist unless the Constitution is amended.
Hope this is helpful.

I'm in Oregon too. And I sent this to our Senators as well. Last week when the story first broke in the Washington Times, I contacted Smith's office in Portland. They hadn't even heard of the 'story'.....but the woman I talked to had me send the story and my concerns directly to Smith's legislative aide in D.C.
I am betting that the GOP sponsored legislation making the Daschle exemption the rule of the land in all nat'l forests, that is supposedly somewhere in the pipeline at this point, will die a quiet death. Fire season will be over and the urgency to act will have disappeared. And next year, we will be addressing this same issue AGAIN while our forests burn.

Good job! The elitist Daschole is an eel worth skewering. I am pretty sure he and his accomplice Gephardt are sociopathic. They have no reservations about lying or stealing from their constituents or the nation. If they had a proclivity to kill they would be psychopaths.

Outstanding.
Thank you for this keeper.
I can hardly wait until this little creep is also reduced to stealing packs of sugar and salt from airliners like other creep whatshisname of recent history.
And he better not plan on vacationing in any Western states ever the rest of his tiny rat miserable life.
