Critics again fire away at Bush

Jabs over scandals, economy signal end of Sept. 11 shield

07/30/2002

By DAVID JACKSON / The Dallas Morning News

NEW YORK - If there was any doubt that President Bush has lost his wartime shield from political attack, Democrats dispelled it Monday.

A parade of critics that included presidential aspirants went after Mr. Bush on corporate corruption and the economy. Some even challenged his conduct of the war on terrorism.

"What has George Bush done? He has put America on the wrong track," said Democratic Leadership Council founder Al From, whose organization sponsored a forum in midtown Manhattan.

In some ways, the meeting of the DLC a pro-business group that helped fuel the rise of Bill Clinton signaled the end of the political détente that emerged after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, analysts said.

They said more criticism can be expected heading into the November elections, with control of both houses of Congress at stake. Mr. Bush's approval rating more than 80 percent for months has fallen to the 60s under the pressure of a sagging stock market, removing Democratic reticence to take on a popular president, analysts said.

"That special period has ended," said Karlyn Bowman, who analyzes polls for the American Enterprise Institute. "It was unrealistic to expect the halo effect would last a long time."

Republicans said Democrats have no choice but to attack because they lack economic and foreign policy plans of their own.

"It has been said those who live in glass houses should not throw stones," said Marc Racicot, Republican National Committee chairman.

White House officials have said they would focus less on politics than on policy, including new laws that govern corporate executives and their accounting methods. Mr. Bush is set to sign a bill dealing with those issues on Tuesday.

Speaking Monday in Charleston, S.C., Mr. Bush repeated that the stage for economic growth is set: "Interest rates are low. Inflation's low. Monetary policy is sound. Fiscal policy is sound. Productivity is up."

At the Democratic conference in New York, some of Mr. Bush's possible challengers stressed other numbers. They cited tax cuts they believe benefit the wealthy, a sudden and steep increase in the federal budget deficit, and a stark drop in the stock market.

"They have no growth strategy, except their one-note plan that could fit on the back of a shampoo bottle: Cut taxes, increase spending, borrow, repeat," said Sen. Joe Lieberman, D-Conn., a 2000 vice presidential nominee eyeing a run for the top spot.

Possible presidential contenders zeroed in on Enron, WorldCom and other corporate corruption, saying those scandals reflect the GOP's all-too-cozy relationship with big business. Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle, D-S.D., said that relationship drained the credibility from Mr. Bush's speech to executives on Wall Street.

"His speech combined Teddy Roosevelt rhetoric with Herbert Hoover policies," Mr. Daschle said. "It was full of tough talk, but short on real solutions."

White House officials said the Democratic rhetoric makes it sound as if the party is shifting farther to the left of the political spectrum. "It appears the Democratic primaries have started early," said White House spokesman Claire Buchan.

Some Republicans said the Democrats are trying to undermine investor confidence for the purpose of political gain.

"It's the Democrats' stagnation strategy," said House Majority Whip Tom DeLay, R-Sugar Land.

Republicans also said Democrats have internal problems to work out when it comes to economic policy.

Some Democrats agreed. They cited discomfort with 2000 presidential nominee Al Gore's slogan "the people versus the powerful," saying it seemed anti-business.

Mr. Gore, an original DLC member who skipped this week's meeting, disputed that analysis, telling a Capitol Hill audience last week that the Enrons and WorldComs of the world justified his approach.

"The Republican Party today is at the hands of an elite that embodies wealth and power," said Mr. Gore, who is expected to decide by the end of the year whether he will again seek the presidency.

Dems' internal polling numbers are no doubt looking bleak. It is the only explanation for their desparate attacks. Bush and the GOP will benefit greatly from these fools' blather. PSSST . . . . Hillary, Joe, Tom . . . . keep it up!!!

All who are aware of the content of Ann Couter's book can only smile as the liberals follow their scripts exactly as described by Ann. Want a guide to this year's (an every year's) election campaign? Buy Ann's book.

The press isn't going to do our job for us.

The fact is that a real, aggressive investigation is going to put Demos in jail. Clinton and his gang carried the water for Enron. High profile Demos are implicated in every one of the financial scandals.

Far from being squeamish about investigating these messes, the Repubs should be very aggressive and public about it. Lieberman's investigation is a public cover-up of precisely the things they don't want publicized.

Like a dog who has been beaten too many times, Repubs duck and cower every time the Demos throw mud; but it is Demo mud they are throwing. Every one of their accusations can and must be turned back on them. The press isn't going to do it; Repubs are going to have to find a voice and a backbone and go on the attack.

Back in 1944, I’m sure that Thomas E. Dewey accused FDR of ruining the American economy. Just because the attack on Pearl Harbor caused America to enter the World War, that was no excuse. Sounds like today’s Democrats are using the same logic, just because an unprecedented act of war has occurred, that’s no excuse for the American economy slipping.

Time to face reality Democrats, we are at war and we are paying the price for Bill’s sins. Sins which do not include Monica, sins which include treason and actions against American’s long-term interests. Of course those actions were for Clinton’s short-term interests so that’s OK..............

Democrats are a strange bunch especially their leaders. They complain about politics of personnel destruction when that is how they try to divide the country. They have little pride in America, it seems that the American people serve for their pleasure only. If you don't cotton to the democratic line, you aren't American. They used the surplus for other countries and other people when there was much to do here at home. They take our best technologies and sell them to nations that will use the knowledge against us. They lack an enormous amount of integrity and don't seem to care as they flaunt sleazy ethics and morality in our faces.

We didn't have a government for the people under the Clinton administration, what we had was a Democrats Only need apply type of government and now they are attempting to replace a People's Government with their tired old arguments about an education system they didn't fix in 8 years, a health care program they messed up and couldn't fix in 8 years, a social security system they say needs fixing and did nothing about it in 8 years when in reality that system is fine as long as lawmakers don't spend the money that social security is meant for; they spent 8 years hiring federal workers with no qualifications as long as it meant a democratic vote leaving behind a dumbed down, bloated army of sleazy federal laborers who have plundered their departments of millions in dollars and equipment.

Democrats seem to have no respect, no real base from which true justice can spring, only justice that bends for them. They have no enthusiasm for country/nation, no pride, just the spoils from a rich nation for the DNC. They continue to huddle with shady and corrupt people both here in America and abroad for reasons that only benefit them. They are elitists and exclude the real Americans as they race for the Marxist Utopia they have dreamed about...where individual successes are discouraged in favor of a commune like population. They have learned nothing from failed socialism or failed communism; they still want to live like kings all the while painting a glowing picture of togetherness for the masses who work for them. It is called Slavery, servitude to a few at the top, domination over the people through higher taxes and rules and regulations. Democrats want a Unionized nation/world of bondage and they can surely have it by dividing the country with the deceptive lies they and the press propagandize with daily.

Stand tall Americans and stand firmly for the principals of our Constitution and the Declaration of Independence, both of which are like the fabled Vampires silver cross or spike to the leading democrats, they don't want you to have either; it is these people who would return this country to the quagmire of corruption of the Clinton/Gore/Reno years.

Yep. And if you'd only read THIS article since December, you'd think
these attacks just started this week. Note to the DMN: da$$hole began
attacking Bush in December 2001!

Some DIMocRAT jaws will be dropping November 5-6, I agree !
